Deborah Mayo
Deborah G. Mayo is an American academic and author. She is a professor in the Department of Philosophy at Virginia Tech. She holds a visiting appointment at the Center for the Philosophy of Natural and Social Science of the London School of Economics.[1]
Biography
She received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1979. Her most recent research consists of developing an account of experimental inference in science based upon statistical reasoning and the idea of learning from error. Mayo teaches an introductory and advanced logic (including the meta-theory of logic and modal logic), and other courses such as scientific method and philosophy of science. She also teaches special topic courses in Science and Technology.[1]
Career
Mayo co-edited with R.D. Hollander, Acceptable Evidence: Science and Values in Risk Management.
Mayo wrote Error and the Growth of Experimental Knowledge in 1996.[2]
In 2010, Mayo's most recent work was published, "Error and inference: Recent Exchanges on Experimental Reasoning".
Awards
In 1998, Mayo was awarded the Lakatos Award for her book Error and the Growth of Experimental Knowledge.[1] The award is given every year for a contribution to the philosophy of science which is understood as outstanding work. The book must be in English published during the previous six years.
