Derek DelGaudio

Derek DelGaudio is an American performance artist, writer, and two-time Academy of Magical Arts Award winning magician.

Collaborations

In 2010, Derek co-founded, along with artist Glenn Kaino, A.BANDIT, an experimental performance-art collective. A.BANDIT has staged interventions at Art L.A. Contemporary in Santa Monica, The Ball of Artists, Art Basel Miami, LA><ART, and at The Kitchen in New York.[1] Together, Derek and Glenn also created The Mistake Room,[2] a platform for situation-specific projects, as well as, The [Space] Between, a “conceptual magic shop.” [3]

Public Works

Derek has staged works at LA><ART, Art L.A. Contemporary, SoHo House Hollywood, Art Basel Miami, and The Kitchen in New York City, as well as, site-specific performances for Grand Arts, The Ball of Artists and LACMA.
In 2011, Derek appeared in "#derekshowlive", a magic show performed solely on Twitter. [4]

Nothing To Hide

Derek wrote and co-starred, along with Helder Guimaraes, in the 2013 show Nothing To Hide, directed by Neil Patrick Harris. The theatrical magic show debuted at The Geffen Theater in Los Angeles in 2012. Though the show was originally meant to be a one-month run, it was extended for an additional 18 weeks where it became one of the five-highest-grossing productions in The Geffen Theater’s 20-year history.[5] “Nothing To Hide” then traveled across the country and opened for an off-Broadway run at The Signature Theater in New York City in 2013. [6][7][8]

In & Of Itself

Following the impressive success of Nothing To Hide, The Geffen Theater committed Derek to their upcoming subscription series before even knowing what the show was. It was from here that Derek constructed In & Of Itself, a show dedicated to the most intimate aspects of illusion and sleight of hand.[9]

“In & Of Itself makes the case for the art of magic with the power of storytelling. Derek DelGaudio isn’t just performing magic tricks but presenting a moving deeply personal and compelling narrative, using magic as a metaphor to reach a deeper truth.” – /Film .[10]

In & Of Itself boasts an impressive team: produced by Glenn Kaino, with original music by Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), and directed by Frank Oz, who Derek met and quickly bonded with in New York while working on Nothing to Hide.[11]
In & Of Itself was extended 5 times through August 28, 2016, making it the most commercially successful production the Geffen Playhouse has had in the Audrey Skirball Kenis since the 2012 premier of Nothing To Hide, also by DelGaudio. [12]

Awards & Honors

“Derek isn’t just raising the bar, he’s moving the whole stadium. He’s changing the game, and it’s exhilarating to watch” – David Blaine [13]

In 2011, the Conjuring Arts Research Center appointed Derek their Director of Contemporary Conjuring.[14] The Academy of Magical Arts named Derek Close-up Magician of the Year in 2011 and again in 2012.[15][16] In 2014, Derek was selected to be the Artist in Residence for Walt Disney Imagineering.
