Dhaunkal (Urdu, Punjabi دھونکل) is a town in Gujranwala district, Punjab, Pakistan.[1] It is located on the Lahore-Islamabad Highway, 28 kilometres from the district capital Gujranwala and about 15 kilometres from Gujrat. Dhaunkal is one of the biggest and oldest towns in Wazirabad Tehsil. The old name of Dhaunkal is Klairian Wala or Kot Klairian which was changed to Dhaunkal by the famous Sufi Saint Hazrat Sakhi Sarwar Syed Ahmed Sultan. The population of Dhaunkal is 20000, of which 8500 registered to vote. All of the roads of Dhaunkal are made of cement. Due to access of transportation you can move towards Dhaunkal from all over the Pakistan in 24 hours because NHA provides fully access. A water pipeline covers the whole town and there is also a water purification plant. Many people from Dhaunkal have settled abroad and many of them have overseas citizenship.[2]

Clans in Dhaunkal

There are two main clans - the klair and the jawanda, they have owned almost 3600 Acres & 10 Marlas of land for hundreds of years. Rice and wheat cultivation and the raising of cattle - water buffaloes and cows - are the primary agricultural activities. Dhaunkal's principal natural resources are arable land and water. About 75% of Dhaunkal's total land area is under cultivation, and it is serviced by a large irrigation system made up of canals.

Jawanda

The Jawanda clan derives its name from theirs ancestor, the Jawanda. They are from the lineage of Dusal, the brother of King Rawal Jaisal of Jaisalmer. Rawal Jaisal, a Bhati Rajput who founded Jaisalmer,[3]

History in Dhaunkal Once a person of Jawanda clan lost his son Dhaunkal Lall during a journey near the town of Klairanwala was in such despair that he cried copiously. When the famous Sufi Saint Hazrat Sakhi Sarwar came to Klairanwala, he performed a miracle and retrieved Dhaunkal Lall. The boy and his father converted into Islam at the hand of Sakhi Sarwar. Later Klairian Wala's name was changed to Dhaunkal.

Kalair

Kaler (Kler, Kalera, Kalher, Koleron, Kaleron, Kalair) gotra Jats are found in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Pakistan.[5]

People who came from the side of Kalakuta mountain are said to be known as Kaler, Jat Gotra. The European equivalent of this surname is "Clare".[6]

Kalakuta is now known as Kalagarh. It is situated about 48 km from Kotdwar, in Pauri Garhwal District of Uttaranchal.

Dhaunkal is famous as Sakhi Sarwar ki Nagri (a town of Hazrat Sakhi Sarwar). 95% of its population are Muslims, and Christians make up the remaining 5%.They Have their own church & have complete freedom of their rights

Geography and climate

The climate of Dhaunkal changes quite drastically through the year. The summer periods last from June through September when the temperature reaches 36-42 degrees Celsius. The coldest months are usually November to February. The temperature can drop to seven degrees Celsius. The highest precipitation months are usually July and August when the monsoon season hits Punjab Province. During the other months the average rainfall is roughly 25 mm. The driest months are usually November through April, when little rainfall is seen.

Dhaunkal Stars Cricket Club was established in 1996. DSCC is now officially affiliated with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Distt Cricket Association of Gujranwala. DSCC provide a good blend of youth and experience which is why they are the one's to watch!
