Dr. Memon Abdul Majeed Sindhi PhD(Sindhi: ڊاڪٽر ميمڻ عبدالمجيد سنڌي) was born on 1 January 1930 in a village Mari (Sindhi: ماڙي) of Shikarpur District. He was a prominent scholar, intellectual, critic and a linguist of Sindhi language. He died on 11 February 1996.
Education
He got early education at his village but due to flood the whole family migrated to Shikarpur where he was admitted in the Madarsa of Molvi Fazullah. He learnt Arabic, Persian, Quran Nazra and Qirat. He completed middle standard from Shikarpur, passed Matriculation examination in 1952 from Larkana and diploma in Civil Engineering from Sukkur in 1954. While he was working on his different jobs he didn't left education, but he passed Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Bachelor of Laws in 1963. In last he got PhD. degree from University of Sindh. His PhD research paper was on "Bayan ul afreen Sindhi ji Tarteeb ain Uptaar" in year 1974.[1]
Professional career
Memon Abdul Majeed Sindhi was appointed as a clerk in revenue department and then transferred from revenue to water management department. In the meantime, he appeared in interview for lectureship and was selected. As a lecturer he was appointed in Islamia College Sukkur. Together with principal of the college, Shaikh Abdul Razzak "Raz", he started a trend of celebrating academic and literary activities to be celebrated every year in the college such as debate, poetic sessions, Youm e Latif, Youm e Sachal and Youm e Bedal. He also became founder of Sindhi Adabi Society & Latif Academy. After 1972, he remained principal of different college. In 1988 he was appointed as a guide for M.Phil. and PhD students of Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur and continued till death. He also worked at many other government and non-government departments.[2]
Literary career
Abdul Majeed Sindhi started writing in year 1953 with a pen name Faiq. His start was with poetry but later he took much interest in prose. He started writing many articles and essays in almost all the magazines and newspapers.[3][4]
Publications
He published almost 66 books in Sindhi and Urdu language on different topics. He loved Sindh and Sindhi language and literature. All the work that he has given in Sindhi and Urdu are about on Sindh. He also wrote on mysticism.[5] His books are really an asset for Sindhi literature. He owned a personal library which consisted almost 19000 books including the oldest books of 12th century. In 1991, he wrote a Sindhi book for class IX & X which was considered to be the best text book. Federal Text Book Board and Sindhi Text Board honored him with award for this work. Among his published books some are: Door (Folk Literature), Manik Moti Laal, Kareen Jo Kalam,[6] Des Des Joon Kahaniyun, Fikr e Latif, Jotiyun Jawaharan Joon, Sindhi Adab Jo Tareekhi Jaizo, Rati Ji Rihan, Sachal Jo Saniho, Tazkra e Shahbaz, Park ain Paror, Sindhi Mein Naatia Shairi, Sirat u Nabi, Porhey Jo Maan, Lateefi Lat, Ghariyun Ghariyum Jin Seen, Tareekh Ja Wikhriyal Waraq and Sindhi Text Book for IX & X.[7][8][9]
Awards
Government of Pakistan awarded him Tamgha-e-Imtiaz on 23ar March 1983.
Death
He fell from stairs at home and was injured on 9 February 1996, family rushed him to hospital where he survived for two days and finally, died on 11 February 1996.
