“Attack wins you games but defense wins you titles”- Sir Alex Ferguson, and this man is the epitome of the word defense. His name is Dudley Steinwall, Sri Lanka's most capped player in football and a rock in the heart of defense. Born in Anuradhapura to Wilfred Steinwall (father) and Malkanthi Steinwall (mother), he came from a family that loved football, his father and elder brother were both passionate about football, his father was a good footballer in his day and had even played for his hometown club Sputnik SC and his brother Chaminda Steinwall also played for the Sri Lanka National team from 1989 to 1996, and eventually moved on to play for the Sri Lanka Air Force team. Dudley schooled at St Josephs, Anuradhapura. He started playing football at the age of 8 and showed promise early on and was soon a regular player for school. Where he captained the U-13/15/17 teams as well as captaining the U-19 team and traveled to Malaysia to participate in the Asian U-19 schools tournament. At the young age of thirteen (13) he started playing for his hometown team Sputnik SC like his father, and brother before him. His career as a professional footballer started in 1992 at the age of eighteen (18) when he joined Renown SC, a club he would stay with for eleven (11) years. His international career started in 1993 where he was featured in the Asian qualifying round for the 1994 FIFA world cup and the South Asian games Football Championship held in Bangladesh. Two (02) years later he was part of the Sri Lankan National team who won the SAAF football championship 1995 for the first time and only time up to date. The following SAAF tournament Sri Lanka could not repeat their success and finished in 3rd place. The following year they were runners up in the Bristol Freedom Cup which was held in Colombo. Where they played against Malaysia and Dudley had a superb match and was awarded with the Man of the Match award. In 2002 Dudley was given captaincy for his country, he wore the armband for his country for 5 years. In the same year Dudley was loaned out overseas to play for Club Valencia in Maldives. Which is one of their most prestigious clubs, Dudley returned to his homeland the following season to play his trade for Saunders SC where he stayed for a single season before moving on to Negombo Youth SC. Dudleys favorite coach Pep Guardiola once said "If you train bad you play bad, if you train like a beast you play the same", in 2003 Dudley’s national coach stated "Dudley is also playing games even in training, drops a shoulder one way to feint movement in one direction, thus forcing his opponent to stretch his legs and present an enticing gateway. Dudley, is one player who always attempts to lure highly competitive defenders, into a trap so he can whisk the ball past him with a flourish. Dudley would walk off happily after a practice session or a match, in the knowledge that he has got something over somebody and done some trick that has worked. Above all my skipper, Dudley Steinwall is unassuming and liking to learn through his lapses and is very obedient and a fine team man, at that”. In 2006 Dudley received his C license coaching certificate by AFC, the following year in 2007 he attended the FIFA Olympic Solidarity coaching course and he also transferred to Ratnam SC where he would hang up his boots after two (02) final seasons. The year he retired as a player, he received his B license to coach from the AFC and having already coached division one team of Negombo Youth SC back in 2005-2006 and under taken the role as a player/coach at Ratnam SC, Dudley decided to continue his career in football as a coach. In 2011 he attended an International DFB coaching course held in Germany. He took over Blue Star SC in 2011 before going on to coach the Old Bens team in 2011 He returned back to Blue Star SC in 2012 for 2 seasons. In 2013 he took over Police SC as head coach for two (02) seasons, he also coached Royal College in 2013, he had previously coached their rivals St Thomas back in 2008 however Dudley didn't coach any school teams preferring to stick to the top flight in Sri Lanka. In 2014 Dudley received his A license certificate to coach from the AFC, in the same year he coached the Dialog telecom team,he also took over the Under 23 team as head coach in the same year, however this was not his first position at national level having already coached the under 13 team back in 2011 and also the senior team as an assistant coach. Having proved his worth he was appointed as the head coach of the senior national team this year, he has yet to have a chance to face an opponent however but the fans will be hoping that he will lead Sri Lanka to glory just like he himself achieved as a player.
