East Lake High School is a grade 9-12 public secondary school located in Tarpon Springs, Florida. In 2014, ground was broken on campus to build the East Lake Middle School Academy of Engineering. It's STEM based curriculum through partnership with Project Lead the Way sees 396 students daily, and many students matriculate to East Lake High School. It is part of the Pinellas County School District. The nine-building complex is one of the most recently constructed high schools in Pinellas County. Built in 1987, it is located on 13 acres (53,000 m2) of land in northern Pinellas County. The school hosts has an award winning Engineering Academy which was founded in 2002, and is supported by Project Lead the Way and the Career Technical Education Foundation (CTEF).
The mascot is the Eagle and the team name is the East Lake Eagles.
Academics
East Lake High School has earned an 'A' grade from the State of Florida since 2010.
The school's curriculum includes required courses in English, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, health education, and fine arts/practical arts. Elective courses include foreign language (French, Spanish, German, and Chinese), drama, music, art, physical education, engineering, and television production. The school also host many unique clubs and groups including the newly formed wakeboarding club along with the also newly formed Anime club. Honors and Advanced Placement classes are offered along with the opportunity for dual enrollment at nearby St. Petersburg College. The school also offers vocational programs and Gold Seal Endorsements for students working towards a Bright Futures vocational scholarship. The thriving Advanced Placement (AP) program saw East Lake students took nearly 1600 AP exams in the spring of 2013. This was more than any other high school in Pinellas County.
Engineering Academy
The Engineering Academy offers courses including: Introduction to Engineering Design, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Digital Electronics, Principles of Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Bio-technical Engineering, and Engineering Design and Development. East Lake High School is home to the F.I.R.S.T. Team 79 robotics team also known as 'Team Krunch'. It has been recognized both regionally and nationally.
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Appearance
In 2005, the school's engineering program was selected by the ABC prime-time television show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, to assist in the construction of a family's home being built in St. Petersburg. The school's students built robots for a robot-themed room for one of the family's children. Stars of the show, including host Ty Pennington, visited the East Lake High School campus to shoot a segment for the show.
Music
Vocal Music
East Lake High School has one of the largest music programs in Pinellas County, with nearly 300 students in vocal music, piano, music theory and guitar classes. The choir performed the Dona Nobis Pacem cantata by Ralph Vaughan Williams in Carnegie Hall in early 2010 in New York City. In June 2014, thirty-two choir students traveled to France and performed various concerts including a performance of a lifetime at Notre Dame, and paid tribute to fallen while visiting the American Cemetery at Normandy. In 2016, the choir returned to Carnegie Hall collaborating with several other groups to perform Leonard Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms" under the direction of Dr. Lynda Hasseler from Capital University.
Band
The school also has a marching band that won seven consecutive state championships from 2003-2009 in Florida Marching Band Championships (FMBC) Competition, breaking a state record. In 2012, the Silver Sound Marching Band received their twelfth superior rating receiving straight superiors at the Florida Bandmaster's Association (FBA) Marching Music Performance Assessment. The band has continues to grow in both numbers and quality earning straight superiors at the Florida Bandmaster's Association Marching Assessment in November 2014, and again taking two jazz bands to assessment. Jazz band 1 earned a Superior. In 2013, the Silver Sound Marching Band was invited to perform in the 2014 National Memorial Day Parade in Washington DC. TV Production
Eagle Eye News
Eagle Eye News is East Lake High School's television news program, founded in 2003. Under the leadership of then student, Miles Doran and faculty advisor Patricia Cunningham, the program started airing 10-minute-long pre-recorded newscasts once a week, then twice a week, and now airs live every day of the week with the exception of Wednesday on CCTV channel 5. It is entirely volunteer-driven and student-run with the exception of faculty sponsor Shawn Anderson. East Lake High School now offers a television production class. Unlike other similar programs in Pinellas County, Eagle Eye News receives funding mainly through donations and the school's library fund. Parts of the news set were donated by WTSP-TV Channel 10 (CBS). Eagle Eye News reports have placed first in the county, state, and regional levels. In 2007, the program launched a website aimed at providing news to the community at all hours of the day.[1] In 2012 Eagle Eye News students won first place in three categories; animation, music video and comedy at the Education Media Awards.
