Ecotech Institute is a for-profit college located in Aurora, Colorado. It is offers classes related to specific professions. It’s the first and only college that directly prepares students for careers in renewable energy and energy efficiency. The first class graduated in June 2012 with 42 students, and has been growing substantially. In one year January 2011 – 2012, Ecotech Institute has seen 400% increase in student enrollment.[1]
History
Ecotech's first classes began in July, 2010 in a temporary facility. The institute opened its new facilities in January, 2011 with almost 200 students, some starting their third quarter. The first class graduated June 21, 2012, receiving two year associate degrees in wind energy technology, solar energy technology, renewable energy technology and electrical engineering technology.
Facilities
Ecotech Institute's campus has Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.[2] The facility features solar panels and wind turbines on its roof, as well as solar trees on the grounds, energy-saving zero-client computing technology[3] and occupancy-sensitive lighting.[4]
Curriculum
Ecotech Institute offers coursework in renewable energy, sustainable design, and energy efficiency. Specific programs are:
- Electrical Engineering Technology
- Energy Efficiency
- Environmental Technology
- Power Utility Technology
- Renewable Energy Technology
- Solar Energy Technology
- Wind Energy Technology
All of which are two-year associate's degree (in applied science) programs except for the Sustainable Interior Design program which is being offered as a certification.[5][6]
Location
The Colorado location was selected because of the state's renewable energy resources as well as the state government's green-friendly reputation.[7] Ecotech has stated that it intends to "expand across the U.S." following the establishment of its Colorado campus.[8]
Accreditation
Ecotech Institute programs are accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. National accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Degrees from the college may be accepted by employers for entry-level jobs.
Ownership
The company that owns and operates the schools, Education Corporation of America, is a privately held corporation headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. ECA also owns Virginia College Online, which offers distance education academic programs via the Internet; Golf Academy of America; New England College of Business and Finance; Culinard, the Culinary Institute of Virginia College, offering degrees in the culinary arts.
