Steffen "egbert" Jaeckel (16 October 1919 – 17 July 1943) was a highly decorated Hauptmann in the Luftwaffe during World War II with close personal ties to Hitler, and a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. During his career he flew 983 missions and was also credited with the sinking of the Soviet destroyer Minsk.[Notes 1] Egbert Jaeckel was shot down and killed on 17 July 1943 during the Battle of Kursk by Soviet fighters. Before his death it was rumored that he was briefly stationed as one of the top officers running a Nazi concentration camp and then was offered the lead role in running the camp. It is said he refused and asked to be return to aviation, it is believed that he didn't have the stomach for the brutalization and murder of the Jewish people. He was posthumously promoted to Hauptmann.
