Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR)

The Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR) is a digital archive for materials on endangered languages, based at SOAS, University of London. They support the preservation of digital materials, including audio and video recordings, of endangered languages around the world. ELAR is part of the worldwide community of language archives (Delaman and the Open Language Archives Community)

Archive

The collection currently contains over 400 deposits, the majority of which are the results of Endangered Languages Documentation Project (ELDP) documentation projects[1] which are funded by Arcadia.

The catalogue of archived materials can be freely searched via the Open Languages Archives Community. Many of the recordings are open access for those who agree to ELAR's user conditions.

Affiliations

Since 2015 ELAR is housed in and supported by the SOAS library.[2] The archive was originally funded as part of a donation to SOAS by Arcadia to fund the documentation of endangered languages, to train students and scholars in language documentation and to digitally preserve and publish the collections.[3] The ELAR office is in the SOAS main campus building near Russell Square. The archive is currently headed by Mandana Seyfeddinipur.
