Engin Akyürek (born 12 October 1981 in Ankara) is a Turkish actor, who has acted in films and television series.

Early life and education

Engin Akyürek was born on October 12, 1981 in Ankara, Turkey. His father is a government official and his mother is a homemaker. He has a younger brother.[1] Akyurek graduated from Ankara University in 2002, where he studied in the history department.

Film and television

In 2004, two years after graduating from university, Engin Akyürek took part in the “Turkiye’nin Yildizlari” (Turkey's Star) TV competition.[1] His first place win in this competition landed him a supporting role in the TV series, Yabanci Damat (2004–2007), produced by Yagmur Taylan and Durul Taylan.[4] His performance as Kadir Sadıkoglu won him critical acclaim and led to his first film debut in Zeki Demirkubuz's Kader (2006). For his portrayal of Cevat in this film, Engin Akyurek received the “Most Promising Actor” award for both the Turkish Cinema Awards[5] and for CASOD (Cagdas Sinema Oyuncuları Dernegi) Awards in 2006.[6] Thereafter, he starred in the role of Nizipli Halim in the TV series, Karayilan (TV), a story that took place in Gaziantep (2007–2008), a story that took place during the French Occupation. Akyurek played the male psychotic lover, Mustafa Bulut, in the TV series Bir Bulut Olsam, written by Meral Okay and produced by Ulas Inanc.[7] Also, he played the male romantic lead, Kerim Ilgaz, in Fatmagul'un Sucu Ne? (2010–2012), a TV series about societal issues surrounding a rape victim. The original scenario of Fatmagul'un Sucu Ne? by Vedat Turkali, is written by Ece Yorenc and Melek Gencoglu for TV Drama and produced by Kerem Catay.[8] He plays a character named Tekin in a movie called bi kucuk Eylul Meselesi written and directed by Kerem Deren . The movie takes place in Bozcaada (2014).[9][10] He came back to the TV screens with Omer character in Kara Para Aşk TV series in (2014).[11]

Theatre

In 2007, Engin Akyürek acted in the original Turker Inanoglu production of “Romantika Muzikali,” directed by Sakir Gurzumar, in which he played the leading role of Ceto, the brave neighborhood guy.

He plays a critically acclaimed character of a naive, innocent man who is not gifted with physical beauty but instead a beautiful heart. He lives alone on an island in his self made paradise but falls quickly and deeply in love first time with a beautiful city girl who gives him attention. However their love is illfated and filled with heartbreak when she forgets him after a head injury and he has to make her remember their love. Although not evil at heart, the naughty tricks Kadir plays on the Greek boy to annoy him make him a memorable character.
Karayilan 2007–2008 Nizipli Halim He plays a pure, innocent, loyal, ignorant, but at the same time very funny and tough character fighting for the liberation of Gaziantep City from the occupying French forces during the Turkish Independence War.
Bir Bulut Olsam 2008–2009 Mustafa Bulut He plays an epileptic and obsessive lover,who forcefully marries his cousin, abuses and tortures her for not returning his love, although not evil at heart, his bursts of short temper and unrequited love for Narin makes him emotionally unstable and commit acts of violence that hurt him more than the ones he wants to hurt.
Fatmagül'ün Suçu Ne? 2010–2012 Kerim Ilgaz He plays his most popular character to date of a man forced to marry the woman he is falsely accused of raping and eventually falls in love with her. He then has to protect her from those he once thought of as friends and make peace with the demons inside his head which give fuel to his burning guilt.
Kara Para Aşk 2014–2015Ömer Demir He plays the critically acclaimed International Emmy Award nominated character of confident, handsome and chivalrous policeman. He is born on the poor side of town but is gifted with exceptional wit, humor and observation which makes up for his socio-economic status. His fiancée is murdered one night and he ventures on a journey to find the killers, however destiny keeps making him meetup with the rich socialite daughter of the tycoon whose car his fiancée was found dead in. His old fashioned ideology and sharp attitude annoys yet attracts Elif at the same time. His character revolves around getting closure for his fiance's death all the while fighting the intense and passionate attraction he has for Elif. The character was specially written keeping Engin Akyürek in mind by the writers of the series.
