The Family Firm Institute (FFI) is an international membership association for professionals serving the family enterprise field. It provides a global forum for practitioners and academics to acquire interdisciplinary knowledge while engaging in collaborative opportunities that facilitate their professional and business development objectives. It operates an academic journal, Family Business Review,[1] certificate program and international conferences.
History
The Family Firm Institute (FFI), was founded in 1986. FFI is an international resource for interdisciplinary education, research, and collaboration in the family enterprise field.[2] FFI's home office is located in Boston, Massachusetts; it also has regional chapters throughout the US and in Canada.
Leadership and governance
The Family Firm Institute is led by an executive director and governed by a board consisting of a president, first vice president and president elect, a vice president for strategic planning, a secretary and treasurer, and additional board members.
The first executive director was Rod Correll. In February 1992, Judy L. Green, PhD, was named executive director.
Continuing education and certificate program
FFI provides an integrated program of cross-disciplinary education with two certificates:
- The Certificate in Family Business Advising
- The Certificate in Family Wealth Advising
Additionally, FFI offers several advanced interdisciplinary educational offerings held annually or semi-annually around the globe that provide interdisciplinary education for family enterprise professionals. These include:
- Launching Pad: A seminar for professionals new to interdisciplinary family enterprise advising.
- The Essentials: What family enterprise professionals need to know
- Family Wealth Advising™: Working with multi-generational families to govern family wealth, shared assets and human capital
Annual conference
FFI's annual conference is a nexus for the production and exchange of knowledge among experts in the fields of family enterprise. The annual program includes a keynote presentation, educational sessions and panel presentations. A range of social activities are also part of the conference.

The organization's flagship publication is Family Business Review (FBR). In addition to FBR, FFI offers the following:

- Proceedings, in which a selection of papers from the FFI Annual Conference appears (1988–2010)
- The Practitioner, a periodic electronic journal
- FFI On Friday, a weekly enewsletter
Awards
FFI recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of family enterprise advising, as well as work that enhances understanding of family firms as a form of business enterprise. The organization annually bestows four awards: the Richard Beckhard Practice Award, Barbara Hollander Award, Interdisciplinary Achievement Award and the International Award.
Award winners include:
- Richard Carlock, Wendel International Centre for Family Enterprise at INSEAD: International Award (2008)[4]
- Pitcairn: Interdisciplinary Achievement Award (2009)[5]
- Leslie Dashew, Pitzer College: Richard Beckhard Practice Award (2010)[6]

FFI also has two annual awards for academic excellence, the Best Doctoral Dissertation and the Best Unpublished Research Paper. Jeremy Short, Tyge Payne and Keith Brigham, professors at Texas Tech University, received the Best Article award in 2009 for their article "Family Firms and Entrepreneurial Orientation in Publicly Traded Firms: A Comparative Analysis of the S&P 500".[9]
