Unfortunately, his independence is soon threatened by the fact that his father Martin is incapable of living by himself, and must move into Frasier's apartment.

Meanwhile, Niles meets Daphne for the first time and is instantly smitten with her, despite already being married.

After being insulted on Frasier's show following a bad review, newspaper columnist Derek Mann challenges Frasier to a fist fight. Although Frasier agrees in the heat of the moment, Martin is angry to later learn he has no intention of going through with it.

Frasier meets Bebe Glazer, a smarmy talent agent who sweet-talks him into doing a series of product endorsements. He finds himself conflicted when she arranges a television ad for a product he does not support.

Frasier is told a rumor that one of the KACL on-air staff is getting fired. When sportscaster Bob 'Bulldog' Briscoe is called into a meeting with management, Frasier assumes the rumor is true and accidentally reveals it to him. As a result, Bulldog quits the station while Frasier learns that his job was actually safe. Feeling guilty and after feeling pressure from Martin, Frasier decides to go to the station manager and beg for Bulldog's job back... only to learn the rumor was true and it was actually Frasier who was about to be fired.

After the premature death of Martin's physician, who was similar to Frasier in physique, behavior and temperament, Frasier begins to obsess about his own mortality. Putting his affairs in order, Frasier becomes determined to find more about the physician to the point he decides to attend his shiva.

Frasier's plans for a merry Christmas with Frederick, Martin and Niles are derailed after Lilith cancels the plans to take Frederick to Austria. Already angry, Frasier then has a bitter argument with Martin in the days before Christmas and Frasier agrees to do the Christmas Day shift at the radio station where he and Roz are forced to endure the most depressing show ever. Just when things do not seem to be able to get any better, Frasier is humbled by a demonstration of human kindness from an unexpected quarter.

Frasier is surprised to learn that Martin has been sleeping with a woman from his building, however he then broadcasts this fact in his next show, embarrassing the woman and infuriating Martin. Feeling guilty, Frasier resolves to get them back together. Roz is going out with Noel Shempsky, a Star Trek addict.

Frasier takes part in a bachelor auction, where he is bought by a model, Kristina. Frasier, hoping to have sex with her, arranges an impressive dinner for them at his apartment. Kristina arrives at Frasier's apartment telling him that she has some quick business to take care of before their date and needs him to look after her daughter Renetta. Reluctant, Frasier realizes that his chances of getting sex from Kristina are better if he does this minor act of kindness. Frasier, always the psychiatrist, learns from Renetta that her mother is not a good person and neglects her often, causing him to rethink his beautiful date. Meanwhile Daphne accidentally buys Bulldog, however her uneasiness quickly gives way to enjoyment when he splashes out for their date.

After Roz is scammed out of $10 by a street con, Frasier claims to always be able to spot a criminal, so Martin challenges him to a test: several of Martin's friends come over to play cards, including one ex-con. Frasier wins if he can spot the con, but he fails completely, losing the bet. Before the ex-con is revealed, Daphne agrees to go on a date with him. Martin is concerned and tries to forbid the date, but Frasier accuses Martin of being judgmental. Later, when Niles hears about the date, he is concerned for Daphne's safety and convinces Frasier to go check on her/rescue her. At the dive bar the ex-con took her to, Daphne is scamming a pool player, running the table and taking his money. It turns out she already threw her date out of the bar for getting fresh. Frasier and Niles show up and get in trouble with one of the locals, who demands money they do not have. Daphne wagers her winnings on making an unlikely shot against Frasier and Niles receiving a beating. Daphne almost makes the shot, but fails, and the three flee the bar.

Frasier's ex-wife Lilith visits him in Seattle because she found a letter from Frasier asking if reconciliation is possible. Niles is mad at Lilith for snickering during Maris's wedding vows. Lilith offers an extremely condescending apology, which Niles eagerly accepts. It turns out Lilith thought Frasier had left the letter after his last visit a few weeks before, but he actually wrote the letter before he first left for Seattle, a year earlier. Mortified, Lilith tries to leave in a huff but catches her purse in his door, further destroying her dignity. Later, Frasier meets her at her hotel room to go to dinner as friends, but they end up falling into bed and making passionate love through the night. In the morning, Lilith looks at the breakfast and says "This was a mistake," which Frasier takes as an admission about their relationship and quickly recites his own litany of reasons why they should not reconcile. When Lilith says she was talking about the breakfast, Frasier is mortified. Lilith breaks down, but Frasier reassures her that she is a strong woman, and they agree to part as friends.

After Niles has a fight with Maris, Niles and Daphne have a moment of mutual attraction during an attempt to make a reconciliation dinner. Stranded at Niles' mansion during a storm, Frasier must reach them before they do something Niles will regret.

Frasier is tired of Martin's favourite chair and gets rid of it, replacing it with a new one. Martin demands his old chair back. The old chair is easily located on the set of a school production, but the recovery proves more difficult.
