Gary Torgow

Gary Torgow is a Detroit businessman active in business, civic, charitable and communal endeavors. He is the chairman and co-architect of the Talmer Bank and Trust, a Michigan based community bank.[1] Gary Torgow is also the founder and chairman of the Sterling Group, a Detroit based real-estate, investment and management company.[2]

Education and Personal Life

Gary has a Bachelor of Arts and a Law degree and is married with 5 children.[3]

Career

Talmer Bank, for which Gary serves as chairman, has offices in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Maryland.[4] The bank has assets of 6.5 billion dollars[5][6] with over 80 offices.[4] Talmer is a public company listed on the NASDAQ exchange.[7] Under Torgow's leadership, the bank grew from its initial $70 million assets to its current value of $6.5 billion.[5]

Sterling Group has acquired a number of Michigan landmark buildings including the The Qube, the Fort Washington Plaza,[8] the Gateway Industrial[9] and the Guardian Building.[10]

In September, 2015, Gary Torgow lead the Talmer Bank to partner with the Michigan Chronicle for the launch of a new award titled S.W.A.G for increasing leadership opportunities for Detroit teens.[11]

Communal and civic activity

Gary is on the boards of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan,[12] Jackson National Life,[1] Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan,[13] Business Leaders for Michigan,[14] Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,[15] Downtown Detroit Partnership,[16] and the Wayne State University Foundation.[17] In Gary’s capacity as a vice president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit he hosted a large gathering in support of the Federation at his home.[18]

Gary has served as chairman of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation,[19] the Michigan Civil Rights Commission[18] and First Place Bank.[20]

He has received a number of honors and awards including the NAACP Fannie Lou Hamer Award,[21] the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Frank Wetsman Young Leadership Award,[22] and the Wayne State University School of Law Outstanding Alumni Award.[23]

He is the author of "Raising the Bar",[24] and "Holy Warrior",[25] and has given numerous talks[26] and lectures throughout the country.[27]
