The Gospel Coalition, or TGC, is a network of "broadly Reformed" evangelical churches[1] founded in 2005 by Christian pastor/theologians D. A. Carson and Tim Keller. The mission of TGC is to encourage and educate "current and next-generation" Christian leaders by advocating "gospel-centered principles and practices."[1] The ministry seeks to extend its influence through its website, conferences, publications, and other projects and initiatives. It has a very strong Calvinist bent, with an emphasis on cultural transformation.[2]

About the Ministry

Council Members

The leadership of TGC consists of 55 members, mostly pastors, who form the TGC Council.[3] In addition to Carson and Keller, TGC Council members include such prominent pastors as Danny Akin, Alistair Begg, Bryan Chapell, Mark Dever, Kevin DeYoung, Ligon Duncan, Kent Hughes, Erwin Lutzer, Albert Mohler, Ray Ortlund, Darrin Patrick, John Piper, Philip G. Ryken, and Sam Storms.[4]

Previous Council members include Mark Driscoll, who left in March 2012 as "part of a major reorganization of his priorities".[5] In March 2014, Joshua Harris stepped down "in light of the ongoing civil suit against his church",[6] and C.J. Mahaney resigned "for a variety of reasons".[6] Darrin Patrick left the Council in April 2016 as a result of disciplinary action taken by his home church.[7]

Projects

TGC currently maintains eight ongoing projects, including a church directory, job board, speaker's bureau.[8]

Themelios

Themelios is an international, evangelical, peer-reviewed theological journal aimed at theological students and pastors that "expounds and defends the historic Christian faith." The journal began in 1975 and was operated by RTSF/UCCF in the UK, and it became a digital journal operated by TGC in 2008. The editorial team draws participants from across the globe as editors, essayists, and reviewers. Themelios is published three times a year online at TGC website in PDF and HTML.[9]

International Outreach

In 2012, the group International Outreach joined TGC. This branch of the ministry partners with translators, publishers, and missions networks to provide new access to evangelical resources in digital and physical formats to countries around the world. Since 2006, TGC International Outreach has distributed almost 600,000 resources in more than 130 countries across Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe.[10]

New City Catechism

In 2012, TGC and Redeemer Presbyterian Church released New City Catechism, a joint adult and children's catechism consisting of 52 questions and answers adapted by Timothy Keller and Sam Shammas from the Reformation catechisms.[11]

Regional Ministry Chapters

TGC has 22 regional chapters throughout the United States and Canada.[12]

Website

The primary distributor of TGC resources is their website, which is ranked by Alexa as the 18th most visited Christian website.[13] In addition to the English site, TGC maintains websites in French[14] and Spanish.[15] The ministry also has a website dedicated to Australia.[16]

Criticism

TGC has been criticized by Jonathan Merritt of the Religion News Service for assuming a "posture of constant critique" and shutting down dissent.[2]
