Gouri Choudhury (Bengali: গৌরী চৌধুরী; born May 1964) is a Bangladeshi-born British singer and music teacher.

Early life

Gauri was born into a musical family in Sylhet District, Sylhet Division, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). She started singing from the age of six.[1]

In 1984, Choudhury consummated her Secondary School.The following year In 1985, she attended Sylhet Academy of Fine Arts and gained achievement in Folk music genre. She then studied at Sylhet Shilpakala Academy,there she received a recognition in music.In her academic years of 1988 She wanted to pursued her career further and decided to do a degree program at Chittagong University situated at the most southern region of Bangladesh,where she did her Bachelor of Arts.[2][3]

After completion of her study,in 1989 she came to the UK where she had numerous jobs.She initially worked as a Bengali music teacher for diverse schools throughout London,she also did some volunteer work as a Women's Development Officer for Bangladesh Welfare Association this has helped her tremendously to develop ethnic women's right skills and other talents. She became very popular as time went by and made 4 cassettes and 2 CDs, one of which is a Hindi pop music and the other Music of Bengal.In September 2011 she appeared on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa,a musical program shown on Zee TV.

she did a music video for Kula Shaker's in 1996 song such as "Tattva song", which reached number 4 in the UK charts.She made her debut and can be seen playing the sitar accompanied by a prominent musician named Ravi Shankar with her daughter. She had been highlighted on the sound track "Radhe Radhe" with Crispian Mills on the Kula Shaker's in 1999 album.

On May 2011,Gauri Choudhury performed at the Boishakhi Mela.In that same year, she performed on a television show interviewed by famous Anwarul Hogue on BBC Asian Network.

Gauri has over 20 years of span in the music industry and has extensive expertise in this sphere singing ranges of songs,including folk, classical written by Kobi Nazrul Islam and Rabindranath Tagore and other modern era songs in multiple languages i.e Bengali,Hindi and Urdu.She had toured many countries such as Europe,the United State and Canada.

Awards and recognition

Choudhury won many "Best Singer" awards, from Bangla TV in 2004, BIMA in 2004, ATN Bangla in 2005 and the community award for "Best Singer" from Channel S in 2006.

In 2002, she won the "Best Performance Award" after being asked by Zee TV to perform on their show Antaksari.[2][3]
