Grapevine High School is an American High school located in the far northeast portion of Tarrant County in the city of Grapevine, Texas. It is part of the Grapevine–Colleyville Independent School District.

Grapevine has been categorized as one of the top 100 high schools in the United States of America by Newsweek magazine, and was named a 1999-2000 National Blue Ribbon School.[2] Students come from Cross Timbers Middle School, other portions of Colleyville Middle School and portion of Grapevine Middle School. Although Grapevine High School is in Grapevine, only half of the student body lives in Grapevine. The other half lives in Colleyville.

Tradition

GHS was established in the late nineteenth century by a group of settlers on the Grapevine prairie. The school had its first graduating class in 1907. In the year 2007, Grapevine celebrated its 100th year centennial as a Texas public high school. The school mascot is the mustang. School colors are red, white and royal blue. Grapevine school pep rallies have been known to be the most spirited pep rallies in the area.

GHS has one of the most active high school alumni associations in the United States. Annually, the Ex-Students Association awards college scholarships, inducts deserving former students and teachers into the Hall of Fame, runs the annual Homecoming Parade on Main Street through historic downtown Grapevine, and sponsors the Alumni Homecoming dinner.

Athletics

Football

The Mustang football program is led by head football coach and boys athletic coordinator, Dave Henigan. Henigan joined GHS in 2009 from Corsicana High School, where he served as the head football coach and assistant athletic director for five years. He has compiled an overall record of 35-21 with three playoff appearances, and was named District 13-4A Coach of the Year in 2004. Before becoming head coach in Corsicana, Henigan served as the offensive coordinator for Denton Ryan High School from 2002-2004. During that time, Denton Ryan was a state finalist in 2003 and state champion in 2002. The football program was taken over by former Plano East head coach Randy Jackson in April 2014.

GHS football is as rich in tradition as it is in history. The program began in 1924 as a Conference B school until 1951 when the UIL changed to more familiar 1-A, 2-A, 3-A and 4-A format. In 1980 the largest class, 5-A was added. During the 1986 to 1995 seasons, GHS was classified as a 5-A school. With the opening of a second high school in GCISD, GHS moved to 4-A in 1996 until 2001. Grapevine won the 4-A Football State Championship in 1996 and 1998. The Mustangs moved back to 5-A in 2002. UIL added a 6-A class in 2014 and Grapevine stayed in 5-A in 2014.

The Mustang Football program currently plays its home games at Mustang-Panther Stadium located on 3000 Ira E Woods Ave in Grapevine. The stadium can hold 9100 people. The stadium is always jam packed on Friday nights

Basketball

The Grapevine basketball program has excelled over the past years, participating in 4 playoff appearances and a district championship in 2006. After winning the 2006 district championship coach Darryn Shearmire was recognized with the district 5-5A Coach of the Year Award. In 2011, center Daniel Green signed to Atlantic Coast Conference team Wake Forest University making him the first Grapevine basketball player in over a decade to sign with a Division I school.

Cross country

The Grapevine Cross Country team is coached by Jeffrey Nisbet, Alissa Cordes, and Rick Miller. The Grapevine High School cross country team has been district champions 28 times ('75,'76,'78,'81-88,'90-94,'96,'98-02,'10-15) regional champions 10 times ('84,'85,'93-96,'99-01,'15) state runner up 4 times (1994, 00-01, 2014) and state champions twice (1993, 2015)

Baseball and softball

The Grapevine Baseball Team is split up into four teams. Varsity, Junior Varsity red, Junior Varsity blue, and Freshman. The Mustang baseball team was coached by Tim McCune from 1990 until the fall of 2013 when he announced his retirement, the program was soon taken over by Jeff Harp for the 2014 spring season in which Harp only stayed for a season. Stephen Hutcherson took over as coach in 2015 and led the team to a 5A State Championship–the first in Grapevine's history.

Golf

The Grapevine boys' and girls' golf teams are coached by Bryan Humphreys. The Mustang boys' golf team won the District Championship in the 2011 - 2012 and 2012 - 2013 season. Varsity player Austin Wride was the 2011 - 2012 District Champion, varsity player Jesse Bratz is the 2012 - 2013 District Champion.

Tennis

The Grapevine High School Mustang Tennis Team is led by head coach Ryan Gillen, formerly head tennis coach at Wichita Falls Rider, and boasts one of the largest high school tennis programs in Texas. Coach Angel Martinez retired from Grapevine High School in 2014 and is now coaching the women's tennis team at Texas Wesleyan.

The Mustang Varsity tennis team has been named District Champions in 1991, 1992, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. The team has been Regional Qualifiers in 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. The 2014 & 2015 teams were ranked #1 in the State from pre-season to post-season. The Varsity tennis team was the Regional Champion and State Qualifier in 1986 and Regional and State Champions in 2014 & 2015. The Mixed Doubles team of Alex Hanno and Haley Holt were State Semi-finalists in Spring of 2008. Grapevine qualified 3 teams in doubles play for the 2015 State Tournament: Boys' Doubles, Alex Joseph and Miha Valencic; Girls' Doubles, Isabel Bergman and Madison Cleff; and Mixed Doubles, Octavia Malin and Keenan Rico. The teams of Joseph and Valencic and Malin and Rico went on to win the State Championship.

The Junior Varsity tennis team has been named the undefeated District Champions in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008,2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014.

Over the years, the program has received generosity with the donation of Tennis Field House with locker rooms, concession area, public restrooms, and team room in 2008. During the summer of 2009, on-court lighting was installed to the 12 court facility and the courts were resurfaced by the school district. The GHS Tennis Facility is one of the premier public school owned tennis facilities in the area.

Soccer

The Grapevine Boys' soccer team is coached by Heath Bullard, and the girls' team is coached by Ryan Davis. The Boys' soccer team are 9 time district winners, 5 time regional winners, 2 time state runners-up, and a 1 time State Champions. The boys' team won their only State title in 1990. The Grapevine Mustangs produced winger Shea Salinas who currently plays for the San Jose Earthquakes.

The members of the 1996-1997 and 1997-1998 Grapevine Swimming Teams were 4-A State Champions. The team has been run by Coach Binghenheimer, Coach Henry, and recently Coach Jau.

Band

The Grapevine High School Mustang Band is a Nationally award winning marching band led by Shannon Gill. The band finished 3rd in the 2001 Texas State AAAA Marching Band Championship to New Century Dawn. It was then led by Steve Andre, Daniel Prado and Brandt Leondar. Before its 2001 achievements, it finished 3rd in the 1999 Texas State AAAA Marching Band Championship and finished 4th in the 1997 AAAA Marching Band Championship. The band currently competes in the UIL Marching Band Competition as well as various other contests around the country. In the 2008, the Wind Ensemble traveled to China for a Pre-Olympic concert tour. The trip took them to Beijing and Shanghai. In the summer of 2010, the band took a trip to Austria to visit Krems, Austria, the sister city of Grapevine, Texas.

Music

Grapevine High School is home to a number of musicians and bands. Bruce Channel was the first singer to attend Grapevine that attained worldwide fame. Channel attended Grapevine High School in the late '50s and was known for his single Hey! Baby which was released in 1962, and has gone on to sell millions of copies. Bruce Channel later met the little-known Beatles in 1962 where he gave John Lennon harmonica tips, which Lennon would later use on songs Love Me Do, Please Please Me and others. Bruce Channel's hit Hey! Baby was later included on John Lennon's jukebox. The song is played by the marching band at football games.

In 1995 Grammy award winning singer-songwriter Norah Jones (daughter of sitarist Ravi Shankar) attended Grapevine High School, before transferring to Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas. Jones sang in the school choir, participated in band and played the alto saxophone.

Quidditch

In 2010 students A.J. Jordan and Scott Holt founded the Grapevine Quidditch club. The Quidditch club is based on the Quidditch sport in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books.

The club has over 150 members, and 12 official teams. The teams are divided evenly into the four Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor (red), Slytherin (green), Ravenclaw (blue), and Hufflepuff (yellow). Each team bases its uniform colors off their house colors. Each team has 7 on field players that are a keeper, two beaters, three chasers, and one seeker. Each team is also required to have a designated captain, who founds the team and takes the responsibility of organizing his/her team.

The Quidditch teams first saw action on May 8 during a round-robin tournament. All of the money raised during the tournament was donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The Grapevine Quidditch club also created shirts for the tournament that were sold in order to benefit St. Jude's.

The Grapevine Quidditch team plays their games at the Cross Timbers practice field or at Mustang Panther Stadium. Teacher Stephanie Bakintas is the head sponsor of the Quidditch club.
