Harcourt Butler Technical University (popularly known as HBTU) is a government technical university located at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh in India. The HBTU was named after Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler, governor of the United Provinces in British India. All Its programs have been conferred in autonomous status under the university.[1] It is one of the oldest engineering institutes in the country and holds the ISO 9001:2000 certification. It offers Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral programs in engineering, as well as Masters programs in Business Administration, and Computer Applications.

In 1959, when the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) was established, its classes were initially held in the canteen building of HBTU until IITK had its own campus.[2] HBTU is the mother institute of the National Sugar Institute (in 1936, then known as Imperial Institute of Sugar Technology),[3] the Government Central Textile Institute (in 1937),[4] now known as the Uttar Pradesh Textile Technology Institute, and the Glass Institute. It was also one of the 127 technical institutions in India which were the recipients of funding from World Bank's International Development Association (IDA) in the phase one (2004-2009) of the Technical Engineering Educational Quality Improvement Project (TEQIP) - the first World Bank project in Higher education in India.[5]

History

The history of Harcourt Butler Technical University dates back to the 1920s when there was a growing realization of the need for advancement in science and technology among the people of what was then called the United Provinces. Consequently, the Indian Industrial Commission, 1916–18, at its Nainital meeting proposed two institutions for engineering — one at Roorkee and the other at Kanpur. To boost entrepreneurship, accelerate industrial development, create a sound environment for contemporary applied research, and inculcate scientific temper, an institute called Government Research Institute, Cawnpore was started in 1920. It was housed in the two rooms of what was called Bhoot Wali Kothi. The old majestic building is still intact at the northwest corner of the Company Bagh crossing, near Nawabganj. Dr. H. E. Annett, who was then the Principal of the Opium Research Laboratory, Cawnpore, of which the new institute was an adjunct, was appointed as the head.

On 25 November 1921, the then governor of the United Provinces, Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler (1869–1938), K.C.S.I., C.I.E., formally laid the foundation of the present main (administration) building. It was rechristened Government Technological Institute in 1921. In 1928, it got the name Harcourt Butler Technological Institute.[6] Its first principal of Indian nationality was Dattatreya Yashwant Athawale (Rao Saheb Rai Bahadur). As of 1 September 2016, it was granted a university status and renamed Harcourt Butler Technical University under the HBTU Act, 2016 passed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh.[7]

Reputation

HBTU is one of the most reputed and sought after Technical university in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and the best engineering college available through the SEE-UPTU examination. HBTU has been ranked as the 45th best Engineering College of India in the Edu-Rand Rankings of 2015.[10] The survey was done jointly by Edu, an Indian company and Rand Corporation, a non-profit American thinktank.[11]

Campus

The university is in the northern part of the city, near the Kanpur Zoo, and less than five kilometres away from the Ganga barrage. It is spread across two campuses - the east campus (77 acres), and the west campus (271 acres) - roughly 3 km apart.[12]

HBTU offers its students a vide variety of UG and PG courses, awarding the following degrees:

B.Tech. courses are offered in 13 fields of engineering and technology. All have been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE):

Oil Technology is the oldest course being offered by the college. Till 1970, HBTU also conducted courses in Sugar Technology, Textile Technology, and Glass Technology, but subsequently, three new institutes — the National Sugar Institute, Government Central Textile Institute, now known as Uttar Pradesh Textile Technology Institute, and Glass Institute — were created out of the respective departments.

In addition to bachelor level programs, MCA, M.Tech. (part-time and regular), MBA (through STEP-HBTU), and Doctoral programs in several disciplines of engineering, technology, and basic sciences are available. Besides playing an academic role, the institute runs research programs sponsored by government institutions and other research organizations. The institute is a QIP (Quality Improvement Programme of MHRD, Govt. of India) centre for offering Ph.D. programme in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Electronics Engineering with two seats in each discipline for teachers.

Science and Technology Entrepreneurs' Park (STEP-HBTU)

STEP is a project sponsored and managed by HBTU with Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, New Delhi. It is financed by financial institutions like IDBI, IFCI, and ICICI with active funding from the government of Uttar Pradesh, through its Department of Science & Technology, and Department of Industries.[17] It was established in 1986 within the premises of HBTU, Kanpur, for motivating science, technology, and engineering graduates for taking up entrepreneurship as a career. It offers PGDM (since 2011), MBA, and DOEACC "O" & "A" level courses.

Student's activities and associations

Council of Student's Activities

The Council of Student's Activities is responsible for organising extra- and co-curricular activities in the institute. It is headed by a chairman and has a secretary and assistant secretary, all of whom are faculty members. It has several sub-councils and clubs, each presided over by convener, also from the faculty members. They have a student secretary, elected by the students through direct voting (secret ballot), done on non-party lines. Elections are held in starting of each odd semester for the academic year.

HBTU is host to several national, international and state-level conferences, seminars and programs — jointly organised by departments of the college and organisations like IEI, OTAI, PACT, and several departments of U.P. and Indian government, etc. Apart from them, the college organises the following events and youth festivals:

Associations

The departments have their own associations composed of students, alumni and faculty members. They are headed by a faculty convener and a president and secretary from among the students. There is the 'Association of Civil Engineers' (ACE) in the Civil Engineering Department, 'Association of Mechanical Engineers' (AME) in the Mechanical Engineering Department, 'Polymer Engineers &Technologist Association'(PETA) in Plastic Technology Department and the like.

Alumni
