Hawker College is a senior secondary college in the Australian Capital Territory. It caters to students completing their final two years of secondary education, and offers a wide range of curriculum choices.

Established in 1976 Hawker has a non-selective enrolment policy and currently caters for students from year 11 through to year 12. It is currently in its 36th year of operation.

The school is a part of the Hawker collegiate, which consists of Hawker Primary, Belconnen High and Hawker College.

History

Hawker College was formed as a result of the ACT developing its own education system in 1974. The new system meant that public high schools would only teach from grade 7 to 10, and that grades 11 and 12 would be completed at a separate college. Hawker was established and enrolled its first students in 1976. It is built upon the Kama Homestead. The word Kama was taken from an Indian love lyric of the same name meaning “A hope and expectation.”The original owners of the homestead were Mr and Mrs Dixon and settled as soldiers/settlers after World War 1.

Campus

The college campus is located in the suburb of Hawker, Canberra. The campus is in close proximity to public ovals and local shops Faculties of the College include; Library, visual and performing arts studio, professional theatre, media facilities, information technology facilities, gymnasium, fully equipped training restaurant and kitchen, training coffee shop, sports oval, tennis courts, modern laboratories and science facilities, design drawing facilities, fully equipped wood area for furniture and construction and cafeteria.

Students

Three students have an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Score) in the top 1%. Over one third of tertiary students received an ATAR of 80 or more. Over 10% of students with and ATAR have an ATAR in the top 5%. Again over 70% of students with an ATAR have the opportunity to study at a local university.

Curriculum

Hawker College offers a wide range of courses at Tertiary (T) and Accredited (A) levels, in addition to vocational courses and "R" units which are recreation/registered units.

International Student Program

Hawker College has had a highly successful program for International student wishing to study in Australia.

Students from over ten countries, for the past ten years have studied at Hawker College. Hawker College offers students wishing to study English, partial year 11 and 12 or a full year 11 and 12 an opportunity to study in Australia.
