The area was photographed from the air by the U.S. Navy, 1966, and was surveyed by British Antarctic Survey, 1970–73. It was named in 1977 by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in association with other wind names in the area: the Helm Wind is an easterly gale in the lee of the northern Pennines of England.[1]
