Holly Jean Manthei (born February 8, 1976) is an American retired soccer midfielder-forward and former member of the United States women's national soccer team.

Early life

Manthei was born in Edina, Minnesota and grew up in nearby Burnsville. She attended Burnsville High School where she led the team to two consecutive state soccer championships and three straight championship appearances. Manthei was a three-time all-state performer in soccer while earning the same honor in track twice and basketball once. She was also a member of Burnsville's 1992 state championship basketball squad and won the state title in the 300 meter hurdles in track and field in 1993. In 1994, she was named a Parade High School All-American.[1]

University of Notre Dame

Manthei attended the University of Notre Dame. During her freshman year in 1994, she led the nation with 30 assists. She started all 23 games and helped lead the team to a 23–1–1 record, a No. 1 ranking in the nation and a second-place finish in the 1994 NCAA Championship. Manthei scored 6 goals and provided 20 assists for a total of 32 points. She was named a candidate for the 1995 Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American and to the All-Midwest Region team. She earned Soccer News All-American, First-team All-Midwest Collegiate honors and was named the conference's Newcomer of the Year.[1]

As a junior, she started all 21 games as the team went 17–2–2 during the 1995 regular season, finished with the number five national ranking and went on to win the national title. Manthei scored five goals and served a remarkable 44 assists. The team had an impressive 21–1–0 regular-season record and Final Four appearance the same year.[1]

During her senior year, Manthei started 26 games for the Fighting Irish, helping her team to the NCAA championship game. She was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy and Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year Award and ended her college career with the all-time assist record with 129 and tied for NCAA career playoff assists with nine.[1]

Playing career

International

Manthei played for the United States women's national soccer team from 1995–1996. She made her first appearance for the senior national team on February 24, 1995 in a match against Denmark.[1] In 1995, she was part of the team that won bronze at the Women’s World Cup.[2][3][4]
