Honeypot Wood
Honeypot Wood is a Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserve near Swaffham and East Dereham, Norfolk, England.[1] The Norfolk Wildlife Trust (NWT) owns and manages the Honeypot Wood reserve, which is 10 hectares (25 acres) in overall area.[2][3]
Location and history
Honeypot Wood is 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from Dereham, Norfolk. It can be accessed at the Wendling and Scarning turning on the A47 near the chapel.[1]
It is an area of ancient woodland, with a history of coppice with standards management.[2] In the Second World War, the site was a bomb dump. It had storage structures and concrete rides, all constructed during the war.[2]
Flora and fauna
Plants in the reserve include Mercurialis perennis (dog's mercury), Anemone nemorosa (wood anemone), plants in the genus Neottia (formerly known as Listera, commonly known as twayblades), Paris quadrifolia (True-lover's Knot or Herb Paris), Hyacinthoides non-scripta (formerly Endymion non-scriptus or Scilla non-scripta, Common Bluebell or Bluebell) and St John’s wort (Tipton's weed, chase-devil, or Klamath weed).[2] Among the trees in the reserve are Quercus species (oak), Fraxinus excelsior (ash), Acer campestre (field maple, known as hedge maple in North America and common maple in Australia) and Corylus avelana (hazel).[2]
Wrens, muntjacs, hedgehogs and weasels are present and visible all year round.[2]
