Taxonomy and systematics
The name Alaemon comes from the Greek alēmōn, meaning "wanderer" (from alaomai, meaning "to wander").[1] Established by Alexander Keyserling and Johann Heinrich Blasius in 1840, it contains two species:[2]
- Greater hoopoe-lark, Alaemon alaudipes
- Lesser hoopoe-lark, Alaemon hamertoni
At the time of its original description, the Benguela long-billed lark was also placed in this genus.
