"How to Talk to Girls at Parties" is a science fiction short story written in 2006 by Neil Gaiman.
It is about a couple of British 1970s teen-aged boys, Enn and Vic, who go to a party to meet girls, only to find that the girls are very different from the boys' expectations.
The story follows Enn, a shy boy whom the more confident Vic encourages to just talk to girls. While at the party, Enn talks to three very nice but strange girls. As he focuses on "making a move" on the girls, it is revealed to the reader that the exchange students there are more interplanetary than foreign.
"How to Talk to Girls at Parties" was nominated for the 2007 Hugo Award for Best Short Story and won the Locus Award for Best Short Story. In 2009 it was the inspiration for a limited-edition poster with art by Camilla d'Errico, which was sold through Gaiman's merchandising site Neverwear. The poster had a limited run of 1200 numbered copies, and 10% of the proceeds were donated to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, a favourite charity of Gaiman's.
Film
A feature film adaptation by See-Saw Films began shooting in the UK on November 9, 2015, produced by Howard Gertler alongside Iain Canning and Emile Sherman.[1] John Cameron Mitchell has been chosen as director, from a script he cowrote with Philippa Goslett. Elle Fanning and Alex Sharp are set to have lead roles; Ruth Wilson and Matt Lucas are also expected to play.[1][2][3]
