Hugh Renton (born 12 May 1996) is a New Zealand rugby union player who currently plays as a flanker for Hawke's Bay in New Zealand's domestic Mitre 10 Cup and for the Hurricanes in the international Super Rugby competition.[1][2][3]
Early Career
Born and raised in Hastings, New Zealand, Renton attended Lindisfarne College in his hometown and played first XV rugby for them.[3]
Super Rugby
Wellington-based Super Rugby franchise, the Hurricanes sprang a surprise when they named Renton in their wider training group ahead of the 2015 Super Rugby season despite him being only 18 at them time and having played no senior rugby in New Zealand prior to his inclusion in the squad. Unsurprisingly it was a season of learning for Renton and he made no appearances during the campaign. He was promoted to the full Hurricanes squad before the 2016 season in which the 'Canes would be crowned Super Rugby champions for the first time. Despite the campaign being a successful one for his franchise, it was one of personal disappointment for Renton, as injury ruined his year and he again failed to make the field.[4][5][6]
Domestic Rugby
Despite signing a 3-year deal with the Hawke's Bay Magpies in 2014 and being a member of Hurricanes squad's since the beginning of the 2015 season, Renton had to wait until 2016 before making his National Provincial Championship debut. After injuries meant he failed to make any appearances in 2015, he played 4 times in 2016, twice from the start and twice from the replacements bench before injuries again curtailed his campaign prematurely.[4][7]
