Human Life Centre, Bhubaneswar (HLC), Odisha, India, was founded in 1981 by the priests of the Congregation of the Sacred Heart (SSCC), and since 1987 has been administered by the Society of Jesus. HLC had as its purpose from the start interpersonal and community growth especially among the underprivileged, with a focus on education.[1][2]

By the 2010s, besides its own 3-story school, HLC was running six slum schools in Bhubaneswar.[3] In its social outreach, it manages five leprosy villages with 8,000 patients[4][5] and runs five mercy kitchens. It has also launched other welfare and rehabilitation programs, with the assistance of banks and other contributors.[4]

History

In 1981 a reading room and a small library were opened in a rented house at 20 Satyanagar, Bhubaneswar. In 1983 these beginnings of HLC were moved to 1 Satyanagar where it remained until 1987, when Jesuit Fr. Ed McGrath took charge,[1] and with the help from the Loyola Foundation[6] a three-storey building was constructed for the school on the edge of the St. Joseph’s High School campus.[1]

Since 1987 HRC classes have included spoken English and job training along with varied tutorials and adult education. From 2001 to 2004 HRC was an IGNOU (distance learning) study center.[7] From 2012 it has offered NIOS examinations.[8] By 2015 it was offering 15 different computer courses ranging from 6 weeks to a year in length, along with courses such as French and shorthand.[9] Eleven fashion design courses are offered for women.[10][11] It also sponsors competitions, in areas like debate[12] and in painting on eco themes.[13]

From his experience at the center, McGrath published a book on Basic Managerial Skills for All that has gone through nine editions.[14]
