The common name of Hybognathus placitus is the plains minnow. It is one of the 324 fish species found in Tennessee.

Hybognathus placitus ranges from the Mississippi River in Tennessee west in the Missouri, Arkansas, Red, Brazos, and Colorado River drainages from Montana and North Dakota south to New Mexico and Texas. It is one of the more common fishes of the western plains.[1]
