Hyphen Hyphen is an Award-winning electro-pop band from Nice, in French Riviera, consisting of Santa (lead vocals, guitar and synth), Adam (guitar, keys, vocals), Line (bass, vocals) and Zac (drums and pads).
History
Band was formed at conservatoire de Nice, when all four members were studying Plastic Arts. Santa and Adam are childhood friends, and met the other two in highschool.
They chose the term Hyphen from Ancient Greek ὑφ᾽ ἕν (hyph’ hén), contracted from ὑπό ἕν (hypó hén), "in one" (literally "under one").[1][2]
They self-released two EP, Chewbacca I'm Your Mother (march 2011), and Wild Union (may 2012).[3]
The first elements from their current visual identity starts showing such as tribal signs. They would later use the term Wild Union to describe the bond they form both within the band and with their ever growing audience.
Since 2010, the four musicians took part in many national and regional music contests. They noticeably won the Prix du Jury Les Inrocks Lab in 2011, Biennale des Jeunes Créateurs d’Europe et de Méditerranée in 2011 and made it to the Printemps de Bourges 2012 finals.[3] Hyphen Hyphen also won FAIR 2013, détours ADAMI 2013 and Best Live 2013 with the two French band Skip the Use et C2C.[4]
After many performances in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Hyphen Hyphen started performing everywhere in France including high-profile festivals such as Solidays in 2012 and 2013,[5] Rock en Seine in 2012[6] or Eurockéennes de Belfort in 2013.[7]
In 2014 they start working on their debut album Times, all written, composed, arranged and produced by the four members, released in France in Sept 2015.
On February 12, 2016, they won the Award for Revelation Scene (Best New Live act) at Victoires de la Musique, the French Music Awards.
On 14 July 2016 at 22:20, the city's PA system had just started playing the band hit song "Just Need Your Love" when the Nice attack commenced.[8]
