Twin sisters Mihaela and Gabriela Modorcea, professionally known as Indiggo or Indiggo Twins, are a Romanian-born American singing-songwriting duo signed with Imagem since 2011. Additionally, the twins are reality television personalities, professional actresses,[6][7] writers, and composers.[1][8][9][10]
A vocal sample of their single "La La La" has been featured on American rappers Kanye West and Jay-Z's studio album, Watch the Throne (2011), while fellow releases "Hip Hop Jam" (2003) and "Be My Boyfriend" (2006) experienced commercial success in Germanic territories. Their signing with international music label Imagem consists of a worldwide, multi-year publishing/grand rights deal.[11] In 2006, they competed to represent Romania at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing 7th out of 12 songs in the National Final. In 2008, they qualified for the top-40 semi-finals on Season 3 of America's Got Talent.
Biography
The twin sisters are from Brașov, Transylvania, Romania.[12] Mihaela is five minutes older than Gabriela.[13]
The twins' father is Grid Modorcea, a writer, author and filmmaker,[14][15] and their mother is Violeta Modorcea, who, in 2006, was Indiggo's manager.[16][17][18][19][20]
The twins began studying piano and dance at the age of six.[12] Later, the sisters graduated from the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Bucharest, and studied acting in Germany and New York.[21]
The Modorceas became American citizens in October 2013 and performed The Star-Spangled Banner at the ceremony accompanying the taking of their oath.[22]
Career
Music
Discogs reported that they cut the CD album Indiggo (MediaPRO Music, 2000) which spanned several hit singles such as "Nu-mi pasa," "Clar de luna," "Am eu grija de mine,"[23][24] and also the CD Maxi "Hip Hop Jam" (BROS Music, 2006) and the CD single "Be My Boyfriend" (Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Ariola, 2006) produced by Germany's pop-titan Dieter Bohlen.[25][26]
In August 2011, international music publisher and label Imagem signed a worldwide, multi-year publishing/grand rights deal with the twins.[4][5][27]
What The New York Times described as a "moving sample" from Indiggo's "LA LA LA" can be heard on rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West’s 2011 studio album Watch the Throne on the song “Murder to Excellence.”[1][28] Complex called Indiggo's vocals on "Murder to Excellence" the 18th best of out of 20 "white girl vocal samples in rap history."[29]
In 2011, the twins were also working on an album with American music manager David Sonenberg.[4][5]
According to Broadway world, the twin sisters have been writing and producing their soon to-be-released album, working with the likes of Peter Zizzo, Rockwilder, DJ Paul Oakenfold, and Swizz Beatz.[30]
In December 2011, Das Label, Inc USA released Indiggo's "LA LA LA."[31]
Eurovision qualifications
In 2006, the Indiggo twins competed to represent Romania at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest.[16][32][33] Singing the song "Be My Boyfriend" written by German songwriter Dieter Bohlen (which the Romanian Minister of Culture allowed them to use as their submission, granting special dispensation as otherwise only Romanian-composed music was allowed), they qualified for the final round in the National Semi-Final on February 24, and finished 7th out of 12 finalists in the National Final on February 26, having received a poor response from the judges but a better response in the televote.[16][18][33][34][35][36][37][38] The twins' mother Violeta, who managed the duo, threatened to sue the Romanian TV station TVR which ran the contest for 100,000 Euro, asserting that her daughters' fans had been unable to enter votes in the televote due to faulty phone lines managed by Voxline Communications Company, but the TV station did not alter the standings.[16][17][18][19][20] Voxline reserved the right to sue the twins for damages.[17] The following year, the twins participated again with 5 compositions written for them by European songwriters Dieter Bohlen, Thomas G:son, Philip Vella and Gerard James Borg.[39] The twins got qualified with "Lovestruck," making it into the 24 finalists from the original field of 259 in the national competition organized by Romanian Television (TVR) to select the country's entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2007.[40][41] However, they were disqualified[42][43] from the contest due to not showing up for rehearsals.[44][45][46][47] They also did not provide the instrumental version of their song in a timely fashion.[44] The duo also missed the music video filming and TV show for the promotion of their song, saying that they had some concerts in the United States.[48][49][50]
America's Got Talent
In 2008, Indiggo qualified for the top-40 semi-finals on Season 3 of America's Got Talent, an American television reality show talent competition. The show began with an audition in New York City, which the twins passed, and they were then promoted to the next stage of Las Vegas callbacks.[51] The audience booed, and judge Piers Morgan called Mihaela and Gabriela Modorcea "the worst dancers and the worst singers in the entire competition," but they were promoted in the competition to the semi-final Vegas round.[1][52][53][54][55][56][57] The New York Times described them as "America’s Got Talent punching bags."[1]
Acting
Gabriela Modorcea acted in the movie National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj (2006) as "Taj's Sister" and on the episode "Hothouse" of the television series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which first aired on NBC on January 13, 2009.[58] Mihaela and Gabriela Modorcea acted together in the Russian/American film Lyubov v bolshom gorode as "Bliznyashka No. 1." and "Bliznyashka No. 2."[59][60][61][62]
In 2006, Mihaela and Gabriela Modorcea played the lead parts Louise and Henriette in the musical "Cele doua orfeline" (English: "The Two Orphans").[63] After seeing Mihaela and Gabriela's performance, Romanian playwright D.R. Popescu, former president of the Romanian Writers Union, wrote a play for the twins entitled "Doua Surori," published in the award-winning volume "Domnul Fluture si doamna Fluture."[64] Subsequently, Romanian director Mihai Maniutiu cast Mihaela and Gabriela in "Viitorul e in oua" (English: "The Future is in Eggs") by Eugene Ionesco.[65]
In June 2012 Indiggo presented a first version of their musical play "Wicked Clone" at the Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York City.[66]
