International relations in Bangladesh

The first Department of International Relations in South Asia was established in the University of Dhaka in the academic year 1947-48.[1] Professor Mahmud Husain of the Department of History of Dacca University was made Head of the new department in September, 1947. Incidentally, Professor Husain was the younger brother of Zakir Husain, former President of India. Professor Mahmud Husain also helped establish the Department of International Relations in Karachi University.

Initially, the Department offered MA Preliminary and Final Degrees. The BA Pass students had to pass the Preliminary MA before sitting for the Final MA examination. Students graduating with Honours in history, political sciences and economics could directly get admission to the Final MA class. Undergraduate studies leading to the B.S.S. degree started from 1968.

The Department of International Relations in Jahangirnagar University was established in 1999 with Professor Ataur Rahman Khan joining on 12 April 1999 as the founding chairman of the department.

The Department offers a BA Honours degree course spread over a period of four years. The department also offers a one-year MA taught course. Students can also read for the M. Phil and the PhD degrees depending on the availability of teachers having interest in the concerned area and field.[2]
