Jacques Backereel
Jacques Backereel (1590 in Antwerp – 1668 in Antwerp), was a Flemish Baroque landscape painter.
Biography
According to Houbraken, who called him Jaques Backereel, he was one of those Backereelen that he discussed in his first volume of the Schouburgh.[1] He mentioned him in his second volume as being the first teacher of Abraham Genoels who studied with him from his eleventh to his fifteenth year.[1] According to Houbraken, Joachim von Sandrart mentioned 7 or 8 Backereel family members that he knew personally.[2] Today he is one of only three Backereel brothers documented; the other two are Gillis Backereel and Willem Backereel.
According to the RKD he was also known as Jackus Backel or Backereil, and was a pupil of Tobias Verhaecht and became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1618.[3] He was the teacher of Abraham Genoels and Franciscus van der Steen.[3]
