Jake Edwards (born 11 May 1976) is a former English/American professional footballer who currently works as a league administrator. Since 2015, he has been president of the United Soccer League, the United States third division league.
Early life
Edwards was born in Manchester, England. As a child, his family moved to New Jersey, United States where he attended East Hanover High School, playing soccer all four years. He was a ball boy at the 1994 FIFA World Cup before moving back to England to begin his playing career at Wrexham before going on loan to Blackpool and Telford United.
Playing career
Telford United then signed him permanently. After briefly returning to the United States to play for Charleston Battery of the United Soccer League he then moved to Yeovil Town for a season before signing for Exeter City. He was then loaned out twice more, first to Tamworth, then to Chester City where he helped the club avoid relegation from the Football League. He then signed for Crawley Town at the start of the 2006–07 season.
On 11 January 2007, Edwards left the Red Devils to join his former club Tamworth on a contract that would see him with The Lambs until the end of the season with an option on a further season.
On 10 May 2007, Edwards and Tamworth team mate John McGrath joined local rivals Burton Albion following Tamworth's relegation from the Football Conference. He was released at the end of the season.
Administrative career
Following his retirement as player, Edwards earned an MBA from Warwick Business School and became commercial director for Solihull Moors FC. He later became an executive at London-based consulting firm Octagon Worldwide.
On 29 June 2013 Edwards was appointed Vice President of the USL Pro (where he had previously played for Charleston Battery to further the expansion of that 3rd division league in the United States.[1] Edwards played a major role in the league's massive expansion in 2014 and 2015, and in March 2015 Edwards was named the league's new president after the departure of Tim Holt.
