Jalakandapuram is a panchayat town in the Salem district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and has an average elevation of 269 metres (883 ft).
Demographics
As of the updated 2011 Indian census, the town had a population of 16184 divided in 15 wards of which male population is 8138 and female with 8046, also 9.41 percent of population is under six years of age. The literacy rate is 81.52 percent, which is slightly higher than the state average of 80.09 percent while the sex ratio is 989 comparable to state ratio of 996. Literacy stands at 87.93 percent for men and 75.06 percent for women. 95.45 percent of total population describe their job as the main work, accounting 1739 females in the workforce.
Schedule Caste (SC) and Schedule Tribe (ST) constitutes 2.16 percent and 0.05 percent of total population in the town.[1]
Administration
Jalakandapuram town Panchayat has total administration over 4,198 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorized to build roads within town panchayat limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction.[1]
Industry and culture
Jalakandapuram is well known for its weaving, especially saris, which are distributed all over India. Weaving and business is mainly done by Kannada Devanger,Vanniyar.
Local festivals reflect Tamil culture and include the Sanjeevi Rayaperumal kovil festivel in September month it is the main festival in jalakandapuram,Jalagai Sri Ramalinga Sowdeswari Amman festivals,Malayampalayam Sri Ramalinga sowdeswari Amman festivals, the annual Mariamman festivals held in March/April, and the Soorasamharam in November. The town's main industry is weaving on both handlooms and powerlooms; there are booming factories with modern textile machinery and products. Cotton, ragi and cornflowers are all grown here. Dairy farms are also a mainstay of the town's economy.also well developing town too.
There are two lakes, one near a Ramalinga sowdeswari Amman temple and the other adjoining a Kaliamman temple.
Temples
Jalakandapuram is known for its temples. On the route to Salem, the Shri Om Kaliamman temple is located at Kattampatti, about 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) from the town bus station. The well-known Kaliamman Festival happens in January every year when thousands of devotees come to celebrate at the temple.
Other notable temples are the Sanjeevi Rayaperumal kovil in malayampalayam,and the Sri Ramalinga Sowdesweri Amman for Maha shakthi Soundamman. A Maha Kumbhabhishekam was held in June 2007 for Malayampalayam Sri Ramalinga Sowdesweri Amman Temple. There is also a Kalyana Subramaniya Swamy temple dedicated to Lord Muruga where a Maha Kumbhabhishekam is held in the month of June.
There are one main temple named as Sanjeevi Rayaperumal kovil in malayampalayam devoted to the lord Hahnuman and this temple was owned by traditional vanniyars family.The three temples devoted to the goddess Sri Ramalinga sowdeswari Amman, three temples to the goddess Mariamman, one to Lord Shiva owned by Malayampalayam Kannada Devanger.
There was a maha kumbhabisekam and two-day festival held on Pappichettiyur Sri Ramalinga Sowdeswari Amman Temple in February 2011. This temple is in near to the bus stand.
The another important temple in Tamil Nadu famous located in jalakandapuram town is Vanniya Maharaja Swamy temple near bus stand.
