Jane Duckett, FBA is a British political scientist and academic, who specialises in Chinese politics and social policy. Since 2012, she has been the Edward Caird Chair of Politics at the University of Glasgow. Previously, she was a lecturer at the University of Manchester and the University of York.
Early life and education
Duckett studied Chinese studies at the University of Leeds and then Chinese politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.[1][2]
Academic career
Before moving to Glasgow, Duckett was a lecturer at the University of Manchester (1995 to 1997) and the University of York (1997 to 1999).[1] In 1999, she joined the University of Glasgow as a Senior Lecturer in Politics.[1][3] In 2008, she founded the Scottish Centre for China Research and serves as its Director.[4] She was Professor of Chinese and Comparative Politics from 2008 to 2012.[3][5] She was involved in the setting up of the Confucius Institute at the University of Glasgow in 2011.[4] In 2012, she was appointed to the Edward Caird Chair of Politics.[5] In September 2014, she was also appointed International Dean for East Asia.[6]
In 2014, Duckett was elected President of the British Association for Chinese Studies.[7][8]
Honours
In 2012, Duckett was awarded the Lord Provost of Glasgow Education Award "for founding the Scottish Centre for China Research at the University of Glasgow".[4][9] In July 2016, she was elected a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA), the UK's national academy for the humanities and the social sciences.[10]
