Janette Kerr

Janette Kerr is a British painter who currently divides her time between living in Somerset and Shetland. In 2005, Kerr completed a PhD in Fine Art at the University of West England. Kerr is currently the President of the Royal West of England Academy.

Career

Kerr began her art career in 1978 as a print worker at Bath Printshop.[1] From 1978-1983, she worked as a designer and layout artist at Bath Community Publications on a radical newspaper - Bath Spark. From 1980-1993, Kerr taught as a full-time lecturer in painting, printmaking and drawing at the City of Bath College.[2] She also worked as a summer school tutor from 1982-1985 at the Open University.

Kerr became an Royal West of England Academician in 2003 and elected as the President of the Royal West Academy of Bristol in 2011; she is an Honorary Royal Academician. Kerr is a Visiting Research Fellow in Fine Art at the University of the West of England, Bristol.[3]

Kerr’s work has been featured in a number of solo and group exhibitions across the U.K and in Norway. More recently, her work was shown at the Bonhoga Gallery in Shetland, Cadogan Contemporary in London, Stour Gallery in Shipston-on-Stour, and Kilmorak Gallery in Inverness-shire[4] Her work is held in a number of private collections in the UK, Europe, USA, SA and Norway. Kerr’s paintings are also housed in public collections in Shetland, Dublin, Bristol, Tuscany, Bergen, Bath and Cumbria.[5]

Extreme Wave Theory

Extreme Wave Theory is Kerr’s ongoing research project that explores the connection between art and science.[3] Kerr regularly visits the Shetland Museum to research, and the work pieces together the narrative of Shetland seas and meteorological data, gaining understanding of the interactions of natural elements.[6][7]
