Jansen Allen (born July 24, 1989) is an American racquetball player.[1] He is currently the Pan American Games Champion in Men’s Doubles[2] with Jose Rojas, and the 6th ranked player on the International Racquetball Tour.

International career

Allen has represented the USA four times internationally. His first appearance was in 2011 at the Pan American Championships in Managua, Nicaragua, where he played doubles with Tony Carson. They defeated Canadians Mike Green and Kris Odegard in the semi-finals, 7-15, 15-13, 11-7,[3] but in the final, they lost to Mexicans Javier Moreno and Polo Gutierrez, 15-13, 4-15, 11-4.[4]

In 2012, Allen and Carson were runners up in Men’s Doubles at the World Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, as they lost the final to Mexicans Moreno and Alvaro Beltran, 15-4, 15-4. They did win gold in the Men’s Team competition in Santo Domingo, as the USA defeated Canada in the final.[5]

Allen played both Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles at the 2013 Pan American Championships in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. In Men’s Singles he lost in the Round of 16 to Bolivian Felipe Mercado, 15-13, 6-15, 11-9.[6] But in Men’s Doubles, Allen and Marco Rojas made the podium as silver medalists after they lost to Mexicans Moreno and Gutierrez in the final, 15-6, 10-15, 11-8.[7]

His most recent appearance was at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, where he won gold in Men’s Doubles with Jose Rojas. They defeated Mexicans Moreno and Beltran in semi-finals, 15-13, 15-14, and then in the semi-finals, they beat Bolivians Conrrado Moscoso and Roland Keller, 15-8, 15-5. Also, Allen and his teammates Rojas, Rocky Carson, and Jake Bredenbeck were silver medalists in the Men’s Team competition.[8]

Professional career

Allen has been in the top 10 of the International Racquetball Tour for three consecutive seasons beginning in 2013-14, and his highest ranking was #6 at the end of the 2015-16 season.

He hasn’t been in an IRT final yet, but has been in the semi-finals three times.[9] Allen’s first semi-final appearance was in November 2014 at the 24th Annual Turkey Shootout in Garden City, Kansas, where he lost to Rocky Carson, 11-2, 3-11, 11-2, 11-5. His other two semis were also against Carson. Allen lost to Carson in January 2016 at the New York City Open, 11-9, 11-5, 11-8, and in September 2016 at the Ghost of Georgetown in Overland Park, Kansas, 11-9, 11-1, 11-7.

US Championships

Allen and Rojas won the USA Racquetball Men’s Doubles championship in 2015 by beating Ben Croft and Thomas Fuhrmann in the final, 5-15, 15-8, 11-4.[10] The win qualified them for the 2015 Pan American Games team.

In 2016, Allen played doubles with Rocky Carson, but they lost the final to Jake Bredenbeck and Jose Diaz, 15-14, 15-11,[11] which denied Allen a spot on the 2016 USA World Championship team.

Allen and Carson came into the 2014 USA Doubles Championship as the top seeds, because they were the defending champions. However, they lost in the semi-finals to Croft and Fuhrmann, 15-9, 9-15, 11-8.[12] They did win 3rd place by defeating Bredenbeck and Charlie Pratt, 15-11, 12-15, 11-6, but failed to qualify for Team USA for the 2014 World Championships.

Allen and Carson won the 2013 USA Doubles Championship by defeating Chris Crowther and Cliff Swain in the final, 15-12, 15-11.[13] They got to the final by defeating the defending champions Ben Croft and Rocky Carson in the semi-finals, 15-7, 15-14.

Intercollegiate Championships. Allen attended Colorado State University in Pueblo, and he won the Men’s Singles at the 2012 USA Racquetball Intercollegiate Championships, defeating Taylor Knoth, 15-11, 13-15, 11-0,[14] as well as Men’s Doubles with Nick Montalbano.[15] Allen won two other intercollegiate titles both in Men’s Doubles. In 2011, he and Felipe Camacho won Men’s Doubles,[16] and in 2009, Allen and Tony Carson won.[17] In 2010, Allen and Tyler Otto lost in the Men’s Doubles final to David Horn and Jose Rojas, 15-4, 11-15, 11-6.[18]

Personal

Allen graduated from Colorado State University-Pueblo with a B.S. degree in Finance and Management, and then went on to get an M.B.A. degree from Texas A&M University.[19]
