Jetta (real name Jetta John-Hartley) is an English indie pop and rock singer from Liverpool. Her song "Feels Like Coming Home" was chosen as the soundtrack for the Google Zeitgeist 2013 - Year In Review[1] spot which gained over 31 million views.[2][3] The song was made available on iTunes and Spotify on December 13, 2013. Jetta appeared at the 2014 SXSW music festival in Austin, TX.[4][5][6]
Background
Jetta comes from a musical family; her mother, Jennifer John,[4] was the Irish singer and "Sense of Sound" founder, an a cappella quartet, and her father was a sound engineer. She was discovered by Paloma Faith's tour manager who arranged for her to tour with Faith as a backing singer.[7][8] She also sang backing vocals for CeeLo Green for some concerts, including a show at London's Wembley Stadium. She started her solo career by releasing "Start a Riot", which was named "Single of the Week" on iTunes.[9] Her "Crescendo" EP was produced by Pharrell, who discovered her after watching the homemade video for "Start a Riot".[4][10][11] In 2014 her cover of Ten Years After's song "I'd Love To Change The World" was used in a trailer for "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,", the first trailer for the movies Nightcrawler and "Terminator Genisys" and in the first episode of the fourth season of CBS' TV series "Person of Interest". In 2015, her single "Feels Like Coming Home" was used in the eleventh episode of the eleventh season of Grey's Anatomy.
Reception
- "Liverpool-born Jetta is like a mix of Adele, Solange Knowles and Florence Welch. Some of her songs veer toward ballad territory, while others are more uptempo. First song you should listen to: "Start a Riot." (Katherine Brooks, The Huffington Post)[12]
- "'Start A Riot' is the super-confident debut single from Liverpool singer-songwriter Jetta. It's a little bit The xx, a little bit Florence and a little bit heavy metal. And if that doesn't intrigue you, we don't know what will." (NME)[13]
- "an incredible new vocal and songwriting talent, who has put herself in pole position for the next big thing accolade 2013" (South by Southwest)[7][14]
- "English songstress Paloma Faith’s live performances tend to be nothing short of transcendent, full of soul-rousing harmonies and Faith’s outrageous updos." (Mark Guiducci, Vogue (magazine))[15]
- Named one of the "10 New Artists You Need to Know" in March 2014 by Rolling Stone.[16]
- Named one of the "10 Must-Hear Bands at SXSW 2014" by Los Angeles (magazine).[17]
