Jhalod (or Zalod) is a large town of historical and commercial importance and serves as administrative headquarters of Jhalod Taluka in Dahod District, Gujarat State, India. It is situated on the eastern border of the Gujarat State, 5 km far from Kushalgarh Tehsil in Banswara District of Rajasthan State border near the Titodi River. It was one of the original "five mahals" of the Panchmahal District within the Bombay Province during the British Raj in India. It also has a small military fort built by the Marathas locally called "Gadi" in the center of the town. The taluka was made up by joining the territories of Sanjeli State and Jhalod Mahal together .
History
In the 11th century, a young Parmar Rajput tribesman from Dhar settled here. He gave his name to the town. The name of the town is sometimes spelt and pronounced as "Zalod" by the local adivasi (tribal) population. The name "Zalod" came from Zalai Mata temple which is 1 km away from the town.
Jhalod was one of the many towns which took part in the struggle for independence at large. When Gandhiji started his Dandi March, many of the freedom fighters from Jhalod joined him and way back, they brought the salt from Dandi. The main residential area called Mitha Chowk (meaning "Salt Square" in Gujarati language) named after their memoir.
Jhalod also led the fight against Chief Minister Chimanbhai Patel of Gujarat when the "Navnirman" movement started in 1972. In 1992, when Babri Masjid was demolished by Hindu activists, communal riots took a big toll of the city. Many people died while many homes and business were burnt and destroyed. One young man Rajesh Sony died leading to a street in Jhalod in Vad Bajar being called "Shahid Rajesh Chock".
Demographics
As of 2011[update] India census, Zalod had a population of 28,720. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Zalod has an average literacy rate of 61%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 67%, and female literacy is 54%. In Zalod, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

In 2013 Jhalod's new M.L.A is Dr. Mitesh Garasiya, who runs the "Shivani Surgical Hospital". He is a M.S Surgeon serving the people since 2002 and now with a greater intensity by becoming a Congress MLA winning by a huge lead of around 50,000 votes breaking a record in the jhalod taluka political history.
Transportation and education
The Gujrat State Department Bus Depot is located in Jhalod. Currently there is no rail-network connecting the town. The nearest railway-station is Dahod.

There is a new separate building for higher secondary section being built by the Jhalod Kelvani Mandal.
The Secondary and Higher Secondary school B.M. High School won the Best School Award in the Gujarat State in 1992.
Attractions
The main attraction of Jhalod is Bharat tower & fountain being administered by Sarvajnik Pustakalay Mandal situated in Vadbazar. This tower is 80 feet tall and costs over 25 lakhs rupees. Ramsagar Lake, Jalaimata, Hanuman Temples, Ramji Mandir, Bhoja Lake,Muvada, Panch-Krishna, Keshav Park, Machannala Dam (machan dam means dam of fishes) are attractions of jhalod.
