Johannes Smemo

Johannes Smemo (31 July 1898 – 7 March 1973) was a Norwegian Lutheran bishop and psalmist.

He was a priest in Drammen and in Sør-Fron, and from 1934 rector at the Norwegian School of Theology. He played an active role in the Church's resistance during the German occupation of Norway.[1][2] For this he was imprisoned in Berg concentration camp from 11 November 1944 to May 1945.[3]

He was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Agder from 1946 to 1951, and a bishop of the Diocese of Oslo from 1951 to 1968. He chaired the psalm commission of the Church of Norway from 1954 to 1968.[1][2]
