Sergeant John Nicholas Coyne (November 14, 1839 to March 4, 1907) was an American soldier who fought in the American Civil War. Coyne received the country's highest award for bravery during combat, the Medal of Honor, for his action during the Battle of Williamsburg in Virginia on 5 May 1862. He was honored with the award on 18 April 1888.[1][2][3]
Biography
Coyne was born in New York, New York on 14 November 1839. He enlisted into the 70th New York Infantry. He died on 4 March 1907 and his remains are interred at the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
Medal of Honor citation
Capture of a flag after a severe hand-to-hand contest; was mentioned in orders for his gallantry.[1][2]
