Juan Gutiérrez Moreno (c. 1780 – 1850) was a Spanish Doctor of Surgery. He served in the Hospital de la Caridad of Buenos Aires and Montevideo.[1]

Biography

Juan Gutiérrez Moreno was born in Ronda (Spain) son of Juan Gutiérrez and Juana Moreno. He was married to Lorenza Moxica López de Castilla.[2] In 1808 Gutiérrez was graduated with a Master's degree from the Royal College of Surgery of Cádiz. He arrived at the port of Montevideo on June 29, 1809.[3]

Gutiérrez Moreno was the first Doctor of the Montevideo police.[4] In 1843, he participated in the defense of the city during the Great Siege of Montevideo.[5]

In 1830s, Juan Gutierrez Moreno performs several written works about rabies,[6] and smallpox, two epidemics that had a catastrophic effect in Buenos Aires and Montevideo.[7]
