Raylan remains separated from his infant daughter so he can work on the RICO case against Boyd Crowder, abducting crooked Federale Agular from Mexico where he is compelled to say that Dewey Crowe was a witness to Boyd's murder of Johnny and the others. Dewey has just been released from jail on a bad confession and a record of harassment from Raylan, who despite a petition to keep a thousand feet away attempts to coerce Dewey into turning on Boyd. Dewey claims ignorance and wanders Harlan until circumstances cause him to return to Boyd, apologizing and asking Boyd to trust him and bring him back in. When Raylan busts drug dealer Cyrus who had recently met with Boyd, Boyd employs Dewey to drive a truck (apparently using Hot Rod Dunham's old trick of towing a car with a bag of drugs in the trunk). Raylan decides to pull surveillance off Boyd to follow Dewey, who gets scared at a state police roadblock and drives off the road, Raylan realizing too late that Dewey was a decoy. Boyd uses the opportunity to rob the safety deposit boxes of a bank he'd cased earlier, but his crew are frustrated to find that the boxes do not contain cash as promised but a ledger and deeds. Raylan pressures a scared Ava to fulfill her obligations as an informant and produce actionable information on Boyd or be returned to prison. Ty Walker earns Raylan's suspicion by offering a suitcase of cash for Arlo's old house and farmland. At the end of the episode, Dewey reminisces with Boyd about Crowder's Commandos saying it was the happiest time of his life, but Boyd believes there's no future left in Harlan and those days are behind them. Boyd kills Dewey, saying that he couldn't trust Dewey any more, then in the final scene is shown contemplating a sleeping Ava.

Raylan and Tim work the bank robbery, meeting with those who rented the safety deposit boxes to discover what was stolen. Among their first stops is prominent realtor Calhoun Schreier who claims he'd emptied his box the day before the robbery. Calhoun takes the opportunity to attempt to broker the sale of Arlo's property to Ty Walker, who is apprehensive of the Feds and has his cohort Choo-Choo follow the Marshals. In an improvised scheme the Marshals get Choo-Choo to lead them back to the Pizza Portal restaurant which is owned by their boss. Katherine Hale is pursuing a relationship with Avery Markham, a big-time criminal recently back from Colorado with a small fortune from legalized cannabis. Katherine is quietly suspicious of Avery, who left Kentucky when her then-husband and his partner Grady Hale were ratted out to the Feds fifteen years earlier. Ty Walker tries to buy another old family farm; the owners are adamant in their refusal to sell so he returns at night with Sean. Ty also intimidates the bank manager and learns that the Marshals top suspect in the robbery is Boyd Crowder. Ava finds the ledger and deeds Boyd hid in the barn and shows them to Raylan. The ledger is actually a list of details and accounts Calhoun has been keeping for his own protection, feeling he'd gotten in over his head. Boyd, frustrated with Katherine Hale and Wynn Duffy about their claim that Calhoun has a $3M cash stash to rob, tries to sell the ledger back to Calhoun. However when Boyd brings the ledger to Calhoun's office, he finds Raylan waiting and hands over the stolen documents. Ava, who had feigned anger with Boyd for leaving stolen property at her home, later tries to repair their relationship and reveals that among the deeds one stood out: that of The Pizza Portal, which used to be a bank, and Boyd realizes where the money is hidden.
68 | 3 | "Noblesse Oblige" | Peter Weller | Taylor Elmore & Benjamin Cavell | February 3, 2015 | 2.01[12] |
After a night of heavy drinking and celebrating with Boyd, Ava is called in by Raylan to a surprise meeting with Rachel Brooks and David Vasquez, who outline the terms of her confidential informant agreement – though to Ava it sounds like they want her to take greater risks, to come back with solid evidence or die trying. Ava agrees to case the Pizza Portal for Boyd, slipping down to the basement and taking pictures of the old vault. Raylan and Rachel look for explosives that might be used to breach the vault, finding that the log books for one mine don't balance. Carl's brother Earl has been extorting the son of the explosives boss and needing more makes him attempt an armed robbery; the Marshals catch them but the father takes the fall for his son. Boyd's crew are discussing the Pizza Portal when Ty Walker arrives and informs them that they are not robbing Calhoun, but his boss, warning of consequences should they continue their course. That night, Sean and Choo-Choo kidnap Boyd from the bar, bind him in a stress position until morning, then set him free saying he will receive no further warnings. Night has fallen again by the time Boyd walks home to find Avery Markham and Ty Walker in Ava's home; he apologizes to Avery, who threatens to kill them if he sees them in the Pizza Portal again. Boyd calls a meeting with Katherine and Wynn, demanding to know why they didn't tell him their real target was Avery Markham.
69 | 4 | "The Trash and the Snake" | Adam Arkin | Chris Provenzano & Ingrid Escajeda | February 10, 2015 | 1.65[13] |
Boyd leaves Ava in The Hotel Samuelson; she updates Raylan then finds Katherine wants to get to know her. Ava ends up having to do cocaine and participate in high-ticket shoplifting to convince Katherine she's not an informant. Katherine reveals her belief that Avery ratted out Grady, who supposedly committed suicide in prison, and she reveals she is robbing Avery to avenge her husband and regain her lost lifestyle. At the end of their day, Katherine asks about Albert Fekus' change of heart, worrying Ava. Meanwhile, Wynn introduces Boyd to specialist "Wiz" who attempts to break open a similar vault but accidentally vaporizes himself. However, learning that Avery is buying up farms to grow soon-to-be-legal cannabis, Boyd decides to get the land first and ensure his fortune in Harlan. Raylan checks in with Art, who is on extended leave recovering from gunshot wounds. Art advises Raylan to concentrate on the case against Boyd and not to start making another against Avery Markham. Raylan and Tim check with Calhoun about the properties being bought up for Avery, noting a number of fires and, most recently, carbon monoxide deaths. They visit diabetic wheelchair-bound Dickie Bennett in prison learning that he unknowingly sold his ancestral land to Loretta McCready. They get to Loretta just as Ty Walker is making her an offer, and Ty calls in Avery; Raylan lets them know he's keeping an eye on them and won't let them strong-arm Loretta, though Avery questions Raylan's own forceful tactics. Knowing that Loretta won't give up on weed, Raylan asks her to get a couple big bodyguards.

After Ava's scare in the previous episode, Tim and Rachel speak to Albert Fekus and make sure he keeps his story straight. They observe a man watching his house. Wynn Duffy had put a lookout there specifically to watch for law enforcement, which would indicate Ava is an informant. The marshalls call Fekus to meet at a motel where they've set up surveillance. Wynn and Mikey arrive to get the truth out of Fekus, who claims he's there to meet a prostitute. Under duress of a cattle-prod, Fekus says that he recanted because he loved Ava, and Wynn believes him. Raylan calls Ava for another face-to-face meeting but she is so stressed that she tosses her phone out her truck window. Ava goes to Nobles Hollow and asks Limehouse for help going on the run; lacking enough cash to pay, she offers to show Errol a big score in town in exchange for a car. Raylan enlists Constable Bob Sweeney to track her down without raising any flags, and Bob separates Ava from Errol with a taser. Raylan questions Ava's state of mind, running without a plan, endangering her future and his case. Raylan promises when it's over to find Ava a safe place in Witness Protection where she can start over and be happy. Ty becomes worried when land sales fail to go through, Boyd's crew having threatened owners against selling. Avery is concerned there's a leak in Ty's operation and pressures him to plug it, demanding results. Ty sends Sean and Choo-Choo to Calhoun late that evening and after Sean does his best to intimidate Calhoun with a story of prolonged impact torture Choo-Choo lays him out with one hit, killing him. Boyd hatches a plan to extend a 40-year-old mineshaft and tunnel out the vault, calling on expert miner Zachariah Randolph, Ava's uncle who has been at odds with the Crowder's over how Bowman treated her. After staring down a shotgun, Boyd pays Zachariah $10k to hear him out on the job, and they start by cutting into a ventilation shaft, triggering an ominous methane explosion.
71 | 6 | "Alive Day" | Peter Werner | Benjamin Cavell & Jennifer Kennedy | February 24, 2015 | 1.81[15] |
Ty and Sean bury Calhoun's body in the woods unaware that bear hunting season starts that morning and the body is immediately discovered with wallet, Raylan's card, a clear impression of Choo-Choo's knuckles, footprints and tire tracks. Meanwhile, Choo-Choo lures out the only witness, Calhoun's call girl Caprice, but she is so nice to him that he has second thoughts about killing her. Ty takes two men (the Tigerhawk vault night shift) and meet him in the woods to kill both if necessary, but they are followed by Raylan and Tim who expose Ty's duplicity. Nonetheless, Choo-Choo remains loyal and draws first, starting a shootout that allows Ty to escape with a leg wound while Choo-Choo drives away making it as far as a railroad crossing. Zachariah visits Ava, whom he raised after her father died in a mine collapse. He makes Boyd's crew give up their guns as they climb into the shaft, spread out for radio contact. At one point, Boyd crashes through a hole and is saved by Zachariah. However, when The Pig later notices the boards were cut he is pushed down the hole to his death. Boyd leaves Earl to protect Ava at her house, and she plays him for information about what Boyd is doing. When Boyd returns, Limehouse calls him and informs on Ava's antics the previous day. There is much discussion over who snitched on Grady Hale. Avery asks Katherine to come clean about it even as he proposes marriage, saying that he left Kentucky because he feared she would snitch on him next but has now made peace with it. Katherine and Wynn discuss this at length, but resolve they'll have to kill Avery regardless. Art asks Rachel, who worked on the Hale task force as her first assignment with the Marshals, but she is unaware of any snitch. Rachel suspects that Ava tried to run and Raylan brought her back, and they realize Rachel can demand answers to protect her career or leave things be for the sake of the investigation.
72 | 7 | "The Hunt" | John Dahl | Taylor Elmore & Keith Schreier | March 3, 2015 | 1.73[16] |
A manhunt is called for Ty Walker who asks for an extraction; Sean is set to go but Avery burns Ty and buys his loyalty with a stack of cash, telling him to lie low. Ty cleans his wounds in a washroom, digging out a bullet that caught on the inside of his vest. He pays a pair of frat boys on their way to Orlando to deliver the vest to 1212 Main Street for him, and apparently sends out his credit cards as other decoys. His car breaks down and he calls an ambulance with a plan to rob their medical supplies but is recognized and kills both paramedics when one tries to sedate him. Raylan is called away from the manhunt for an appointment with Winona, holds his daughter for the first time, learns she has a heart murmur, and has to figure out custody. To give Winona some relief he takes the crying infant for a drive – in to the office. Winona says she wants Raylan back in her life, at her side raising their daughter. Boyd takes Ava up to his father's hunting cabin in Bulletville where he retrieves and opens a rare bottle he'd been saving for his wedding night. He talks about writing their vows, about commitment, trust and loyalty. Boyd has her out before dawn to hunt, talking about killing and betrayal, then leaves her unarmed as he kills a boar. After eating the fresh kill, Boyd confronts Ava about her informing to Raylan. She admits to selling him out but he is more concerned she may be sleeping with Raylan, which she denies. Boyd apologizes, saying he'd let her down when she was in prison, and that if they trust each other they can have Raylan going in circles while Boyd gets enough money for them to start over again. Avery is at the Marshals for questioning when Art casually steps in and asks him about the old days, about Grady's indictment and his affair with Katherine and U.S. Attorney Simon Poole who was shot dead about the same time – Poole would have been the only one who knew the identity of the snitch against Grady.
73 | 8 | "Dark As a Dungeon" | Gwyneth Horder-Payton | Chris Provenzano & VJ Boyd | March 10, 2015 | 1.80[17] |
Ready to pull-up roots, Raylan cleans up Arlo's house and burns the contents of his old army footlocker. He makes arrangements to have the family remains interred on the property moved to the town cemetery. Raylan then catches Zachariah getting a box of dynamite to hurry along the tunnelling per Boyd's request, and Raylan lets him carry-on hoping Boyd will get in deeper. Raylan then goes to Avery at the empty Pizza Portal, asking for help to conclude the manhunt so he can get back on Boyd, revealing that Boyd has been the thorn in Avery's side. Avery goes along, announcing a $100k reward for bringing in Ty. Earl escorts Ava home only to be ambushed by Ty. Having been burned by Avery, Ty proposes to Boyd a scheme to rob his former employer, knowing his team are dead or in the wind leaving an unguarded vault to which he has the combination. Raylan arrives and tells them about the reward for Ty; realizing it is too dangerous to shelter him, Boyd reveals the fugitive who makes a run for it and is shot down by Raylan. To collect the reward Boyd is brought to the Pizza Portal and shown the stacks of cash, some $10M, lighting a fire under him to pull off the heist. Ava later informs to Raylan, telling him the mineshaft Boyd is using to tunnel for the vault, though Raylan also gets the impression that Ava's been burned. Before leaving Harlan, Raylan looks into Arlo's back shed fearing the worst but finding it empty. Also, Wynn provides Katherine with a theory linking now-deceased Gordon Keith, a colleague of his who worked for Avery, as the killer of both Grady and Poole; Katherine passes along this information to Art.
74 | 9 | "Burned" | Don Kurt | Dave Andron & Leonard Chang & Jenny DeArmitt | March 17, 2015 | 1.81[18] |
Working from the files Wynn gave Katherine, Art gets Simon Poole's documents unsealed and learns that Wynn himself was the informant against Grady. Art and Raylan threaten to leak this to Katherine, blackmailing Wynn's cooperation so he'll inform once again. Wynn tells Boyd that Avery is moving the money during a party at the Pizza Portal that evening, provoking him to move up his timetable. Loretta McCready finds a headless rattlesnake in her home, courtesy of Avery's trusted gunman, Boon. Loretta calls on Boyd, suggesting a partnership with her land and knowhow matched with his muscle and distribution. Having his sights on Avery's money, Boyd gives his blessing to Loretta's purchase of the farms he's threatened against selling, and for men to protect her for fair wages. Among the full house at the Pizza Portal party are Avery, Katherine, Raylan, Loretta, Boon, Boyd, Ava, Earl, and a number of landowners. Raylan offers to sell Arlo's property to Loretta. Boon seems to have a man-crush on Raylan. Avery reveals his plan to generously purchase lands and lift up the economy. Boyd questions his motivations and how much money will stay in Harlan, and Loretta names those who have died after refusing Avery's offers. Loretta puts forward her offer to the landowners: to buy them out for cash but keep them in their homes, hire locals for security and farm hands and keep the profits in the county, and names Boyd as her partner. Raylan checks-in with Ava, who explains she's supposed to tell him the heist is next week but it's actually that night, that she's to start a fire to clear the place out. Boyd joins Zakariah in the tunnel but the moment Boyd lights the fuse Zackariah attacks him and chains him to a support post. Carl hears Boyd's screams and goes to him, passing him a rock hammer to break the chain and escape. Zackariah has disappeared, and Ava reminds Boyd she's warned her uncle wasn't right in the head. Although the Marshals fail to catch Boyd red-handed, Raylan reminds Rachel that they've got two informants and Boyd is going to go after that money with desperate stupidity when Avery tries to move it. Sean holds Avery and Katherine at gunpoint in her suite, demanding more money after Avery sold-out Ty. Katherine offers her tennis bracelet and shoots through her purse, killing Sean.
75 | 10 | "Trust" | Adam Arkin | Benjamin Cavell | March 24, 2015 | 1.72[19] |
Raylan and Tim push Avery's paranoia, suggesting that Katherine is working with Boyd to steal his money and predicting that she will inquire about how he's moving it. Avery tells her that he's moving the money to Charlotte, she tells Wynn who tells Boyd and informs Boyd's attack plan to Raylan. Raylan sets up a decoy truck to be attacked, and though Boyd knows it's too easy and must be a trap he sends Carl and Earl to hit it (they are arrested with no shots fired). Ava informs to Raylan that Boyd is pursuing the money by other means, which prove to be the kidnapping for ransom of Katherine. Though Avery knows Katherine has betrayed him, he brings the cash in two large duffel bags with no tricks. As Boyd leaves with the money he informs Avery that robbing him was Katherine's idea from the beginning. Raylan tells Ava that Vasquez is pulling the plug, looking for a way to bust Boyd that doesn't require her cooperation so he won't be obliged to honor their deal. She offers to give up Boyd with the money when he calls for her to meet with $100k identity documents he bought from Limehouse, and Dewey's necklace she found in the bar. Desperate, she suggests getting Boyd to confess to Dewey's murder so Raylan will let them meet, but instead shoots Boyd with his own gun and escapes with the money and identity papers. Boon kills Loretta's great-aunt, her only living relative, when the tough old bird proves uncooperative. Later, Boon intimidates a hipster and an engineering student in a greasy spoon. Mikey has been dismayed over Wynn's snitching to the Marshals and asks if Wynn also snitched-out Grady Hale. Getting an implied yes, Mikey physically subdues Wynn, handcuffs him to the fixed table in the RV, and puts in a call to Katherine.
76 | 11 | "Fugitive Number One" | Jon Avnet | Taylor Elmore & Keith Schreier | March 31, 2015 | 1.96[20] |
Art comes back from leave to take over Marshal operations in Kentucky. Vasquez questions Raylan and his relationship with Ava, whom he allowed to escape with the money, suggesting they are in cahoots. Later, after Raylan fails to heed instructions to return to Lexington, Art says he'll be coming to bring Raylan in himself. Boyd has been patched up and Raylan offers him opportunity to give up Ava before Avery and Katherine find her, but Boyd is intent on finding her himself. Boyd does suggest that Ava may be getting help from Zachariah, who helps Ava drag the money up to an abandoned mining rescue supply station in the hills. They've already left when the Marshals arrive, hiking to meet Groobes who can lead them across the mountains. However, they arrive to find the hermit long dead. Katherine responds to Mikey's call, but as she talks to Wynn about protecting and avenging ones partner, Mikey realizes there are other codes to follow and has a change of heart. Mikey takes five bullets but still manages to kill Katherine with his bare hands, passing Wynn the handcuff keys and asking Wynn to hold him as he collapses and dies. Avery pays-off the jail guards to visit Carl and Earl, arranging Carl's release on a mission to kill Boyd under threat of Earl's life. One of Avery's crooked cops gets Carl into Boyd's hospital room where Carl interrogates Boyd with a gun to his head, but becomes convinced Boyd is his best chance of saving his brother and getting out clear. After getting uncuffed from his hospital bed and into the lawman's uniform, Boyd shoots Carl dead to cause a diversion and escape. Learning that Carl failed, Avery gets Earl released as well but Raylan arrives in time to thwart the crooked cops. Raylan drives Earl to the Pizza Portal and threatens Avery's testimony in Carl's death for Avery to abandon any further efforts to reclaim the money or harm Ava, while also encouraging Earl to agree to testify that he might benefit from protective custody. Earl tells Raylan about Groobes, and Raylan heads into the hills leaving the Marshals to pick up Earl. Boon continues to threaten and intimidate Loretta.
77 | 12 | "Collateral" | Michael Pressman | Chris Provenzano & VJ Boyd | April 7, 2015 | 1.83[21] |
Raylan leaves his badge behind as he heads up into the hills, happening upon a camp of hill folk forced off their land by mining pollution. Learning that there's bad blood over Arlo using them to move drugs up and down the mountain, Raylan signs over the deed to Arlo's place to them as restitution and to be rid of his last tie to Harlan, and continues on his way to Groobes' cabin. Zachariah digs a grave for Groobes, thinking the wisest thing is to lay low with six months' of supplies in the cabin. When they hear on a police scanner that Boyd has escaped custody, Zachariah wants to ambush him but Ava is terrified and runs with $1M, placing a call for help when she gets a signal. Wynn Duffy, released from custody, arranges for purchase of two passports, a gun, and a dog-grooming van with a large well-hidden compartment, suggesting that he's preparing to leave with Ava and the money; he pays with Katherine's shoplifted diamond tennis bracelet and large engagement ring. Vasquez becomes irate with the Marshals who have merely issued a bulletin saying Raylan's life has been threatened, and puts in a call to the FBI. Constable Bob Sweeney hears the FBI BOLO for Raylan and calls offering his help but discovers he has already given it as Raylan borrowed his Crown Vic. Bob uses a tracker to find the car and catches Ava trying to get into it with a backpack of money. He zip-cuffs her in his Gremlin when they hear a gunshot nearby, and Bob investigates. It was Boyd, killing the local he'd used to drive him around the backroads, and soon additional shots are heard. Ava desperately breaks free and is once again on the run. Coming down the hill, Raylan encounters Boyd on his way up. They exchange gunfire and words in the dark, but Boyd slips away and Raylan continues down to aid a gunshot Bob Sweeney, rushing him to hospital where Raylan is taken into custody by state troopers. Ava is captured on the road by cops on Avery's payroll. And Boyd survives Zachariah's ambush at the cabin but nearly buys it when gunshot Zachariah blows himself up with dynamite. Boon has found Loretta hiding in the old Bennett weed-drying barn and shoots her ex-boyfriend Derrek who tries to defend her, Avery finishing the job when he arrives. Avery is concerned that Loretta might be conspiring with Ava, but believes her when she denies it. Threatened with death, Loretta offers to partner with Avery, avoiding him costly delays and providing know-how and local ties; he seems inclined to accept.
78 | 13 | "The Promise" | Adam Arkin | Graham Yost & Fred Golan & Dave Andron & Benjamin Cavell | April 14, 2015 | 2.24[22] |
Injured Boyd unearths Groobes' grave looking for the money, giving the Federals time to close in on him. He runs further up the mountain, throwing dynamite to deter pursuit. Ava is brought to Loretta's barn to see Avery, and says that Zackariah helped her drag the money up to Groobes' property on a mountain now crawling with Federals searching for Boyd. They have her call the cabin and she speaks with Boyd, as Zackariah, telling him to bring the money to them, while enticing Boyd to rescue her as she's the only one who knows where the money is hid. Boyd tells them to meet him at another location to divide Avery's forces, drawing away Boon and Loretta. Art talks the state troopers into remanding Raylan to his custody, and is convinced to help Raylan find Ava. Having heard that police dogs tracked Ava's scent to Dewey's necklace, they realize she was picked up and force one of Avery's crooked cops to give up his location. Art must return to the manhunt so Raylan goes alone. Boyd gets there first using one of the crooked cops as a shield; Avery starts shooting and Boyd comes out on top, shooting Avery through the eye and killing all the crooked cops, then pulling the trigger on Ava though his gun is by then empty. Raylan arrives and kicks a loaded gun over to Boyd that they might finish their business, though Boyd refuses. Soon the Marshals arrive in force and Boyd is walked out in cuffs. Raylan is driving Ava in to Lexington, told that there are no deals to be made, ominous music playing as they drive through the hills. They are hit by Boon who forces a quick draw gunfight. Both men draw and shoot, Boon taking one in the upper chest while Raylan is shot through his hat, collapsing. Boon struggles to take another shot when Loretta steps on his wrist and watches him die. Raylan comes around and examines his wound when Ava drives off with his car. (It is suggested that she was picked up by Wynn Duffy, who also vanished.) Raylan moves on, and four years later he is in Miami and part of his daughter's life though Winona is with a new man. Raylan gets a lead and finds Ava living a quiet life on a ranch in Lebec, California, where she reveals that she has a boy, Zackariah, and desperately asks Raylan not to let Boyd know about him. Raylan leaves Ava but calls on Boyd, who is back to preaching in prison, and tells him that they just put together that Ava died on a stolen identity three years earlier. Boyd asks why Raylan went out of his way to deliver the news in person, and answers himself, "We dug coal together", to which Raylan responds, "That's right." |
