KVCU AM 1190, popularly known as Radio 1190 is a college radio station affiliated with the University of Colorado Boulder. Staff of the station are compensated with funds provided by the University of Colorado Student Government while a portion of the station's operating funds are raised during biannual on-air pledge drives. The station was formerly identified as KUCB. In 1996 Jacor Communications donated KVCU (previously KBCO)'s equipment and transmitter to the University of Colorado Foundation. After two years of negotiating and planning Radio 1190 am at the University of Colorado Boulder went live on November 4, 1998.[2] On October 2011, Mikey Goldenberg of Alice 105.9 became the new General Manager of the station. He replaced Mike Flanagan, who left the station after 6 years as GM to become the General Manager of newly founded Open Air CPR. When asked about his relationship with Radio 1190, Flanagan stated "we're going to have a good relationship with 1190 -- and I'm going to be more sensitive to not step on their toes, because I have a real affection for them and want them to be successful." [3]
Programming
Radio 1190's shows are mostly ran by volunteers, though many of the managers of the station have shows as well. The volunteers come either from the college student body, or from outside community members.
Rotation Shows
Radio 1190 runs rotation music throughout the week, Monday through Friday, from 7AM to 6PM. These shows play current music chosen by the station's Music Director. Music stays in rotation for anywhere from 2-4 week, then it is rotated out for newer music. This lets the station keep fresh songs playing throughout the most frequent listening hours.
Specialty Shows
In addition to the rotation shows, from 6PM to 10PM Radio 1190 runs specialty shows. These shows are ran by veteran DJs, with at least a semester of rotation DJing in experience. These shows have themes chosen by the host of the show. Applications for new shows are done at the beginning of every semester.
Boom Operator
A show that looks at movie soundtracks from various eras of film. Themes range from movie genres, to directors, composers, holidays, etc. The show runs from 8-9PM on Mondays.
Krewe de Louisianne
A show dedicated to artists from and tunes about Louisiana and the Mississippi delta. The show runs every Saturday morning 10am - Noon.
