Idols
Paruthiyur Adhi Varadaraja Perumal
The main idol Adhi Varadharaja Perumal in the Paruthiyur Temple is bestowing his grace with 'Prayoga-Chakra". This chakra is believed to have been sent to protect King Ambarisha, a Vishnu devotee, from the curse of Durvasa, the famous sage. In Duruvasa's rage, he created a demon to kill Ambarisha, out of a strand of his hair. King Ambarisha prayed to his favorite God Vishnu. Lord Narayana’s Sudarshana intervened and destroyed the demon and protected King Ambarisha.
Sudarshana Chakra
Hindu mythology is full of references regarding the relationship and synergy between the Chakram and Lord Vishnu. Sudarshana Chakra or the divine disc of Maha Vishnu is one of the Lord’s prominent weapons in annihilating evil forces. Usually Vishnu’s Sudarshana Chakra in most temples is held on the side but in the Paruthiyur Temple it is in a rare Prayoga state ~ as if it is in use. It is believed that it is this Chakra that was used by the Lord against Durvasa. Hence there are also no houses built on the south side of the street across the Temple. The benefits of Prayers and Homas to Sudarshana are innumerable. It is stated in the Ahirbudhnya Samhita that when the devotees are suffering from the afflictions caused by incurable diseases, sorcery, or enemies, Lord Sudarshana dispels his fierce form and comes to their protection.

History
This Paruthiyur perumal temple was built in the early 19th century by a great Vishnu Bhakta by the name Paruthiyur Sri Krishna Sastri (1773–1860) popularly known as Ayyaval, who lived during the rule of Serfoji_II Maharaja. Ayyaval had spent most of his time in this temple with his parayanams of the Vishnu Puranas and the Ramayana, teaching of the scriptures and spreading bhakti and promoting Hindu Dharma. He was an authority over the Vaishnava traditions. Ayyaval addressed several issues by answering the queries on Dharma Sastram and acharam, often posed to them by Vedic scholars and pundits. His authority on the administration of dharma made many legal luminaries come to them seeking their advice on issues concerning Hindu law. Paruthiyur Sri Krishna Sastri Ayyaval along with his brother Paruthiyur Sri Venkatesha Sastri Annaval (1770–1841) were the doyen brothers of our Paruthiyur and for the Hindu Religion.
Later, this temple became the life and soul of a Mahaan Brahmasri Paruthiyur Krishna Sastri (1855–1911). He was a great Rama Bhakta, a Ramayana exponent, Philanthropist and a Pravachan Pioneer. He renovated this Paruthiyur Perumal temple and installed Mahalakshmi, Kodandarama Parivaar sannadhis and constructed the temple tank kodadhandarama Threertham known as the Melakulam which made the temple very famous and auspicious.
