Karor Lal Esan (Punjabi,Urdu: كروڑ لعل عيسن), or Kot Kahror, is a city of Layyah District in the Punjab province of Pakistan. The city is the capital of Karor Lal Esan Tehsil and administrative subdivision of the district.[1] It is located at 31°13'0N 70°57'0E with an altitude of 148 metres (488 feet).[2] Its old name is Depal Pur. The city is partially named after a saint, Hazrat Lal Esan, Who recited 10 million times the Sura Yaseen( A chapter from The Holy Quran) while standing on foot in the Indus River. In Urdu 10 million is equal to 1 Karor that's why the city is called Karor Lal Esan. Hazrat Lal Esan was the grandfather of the famous Bahudin Zakarya Multani.
This city is located on the west coast of the famous Indus River. There is a popular festival, called Mela Chodhwein, held in Karor every year in September. This festival is celebrated in the memory of Hazrat Lal Esan. On this festival Qawalis are performed by some famous Qawals (singers) and some local singers. The fair showcases a number of events such as horse racing, tent pegging, camel fighting, bullfighting and racing, wrestling, kabaddi, dodda, and many others.
It has very important political role in Punjab as many famous politicians belong to this city like Sardar Jahangir Ahmad Khan Sehar,Sardar Behram Khan Sehar,Sardar Haji Haq Nawaz Khan Sewag,Sardar Bahadur Ahmad Khan Sehar,Sardar Feroz Ali Khan Sewag,Sardar Shahbudin Khan Sehar,Sardar Sajjad Ahmad Khan Sehar and Malik Ahmad Ali Oulak. Karor Lal Esan also has higher literacy rate than other South Punjab Tehsils. It has many famous Schools and have helped in producing many famous doctors, engineers and poets.
There are few other tombs of saints in the city, e.g. Darbar Hazrat Rajan Shah (Sain Sudhey Bhag) Darbar Araf Shah, Darbar Shah Habib sb. and Darbar Shah Ashraf Sb. Khawja Ghulam Hassan Sewag Shareef's tomb is Near Karor Lal Esan. Many People pay visit to the tomb daily. Its population is above 950000.[3] The majority of the population are Saraiki speaking. Karor is a centre of Saraiki culture. The city has the largest graveyard of Pakistan around the tomb in which are buried great Sofia and companions of Hazrat Lal Eason.
The city is located to East of Indus River and Suleman Mountainous ranges, hence the lands in vicinity of river are much fertile growing especially wheat and rice. The area has great potential for natural resources and have a great potential for oil and gas exploration as well defined Geological structures (anticlines) have been mapped during the seismic surveys in different areas of Karor that can be potential reservoirs of oil and gas.
Climate
Karor Lal Esan has extreme weather (as does the whole district of Layyah). Summer lasts from May to September; June is the hottest month with an average monthly temperature of 50 °C with a maximum of up to 53 °C. In winter, however, the December and January temperatures are as low as 0 to 2 °C average monthly.
