Kathy Butterly

Kathy Butterly is an American sculptor. She was born in Amityville, New York in 1963 and resides in New York City. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1986 and her Master of Fine Arts from University of California, Davis in 1990.[1]

Her work has been compared to that of George Ohr, manifested in "a penchant for crumpled shapes, twisted and pinched openings, and making . . . 'no two alike.' "[2][3] Butterly's work consists of ornately decorated porcelain sculptures that suggest feminine personalities.

Her first solo exhibition was at Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York. Kathy Butterly has won the 2009 Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant for Sculptors and Painters.

Kathy Butterly won the 2012 Smithsonian American Art Museum's 10th Contemporary Artist Award.[4] In 2013 she won the Visionary Woman Award from Moore College of Art and Design.[5]
