Keswick School is a coeducational 11–18 comprehensive with 1183 pupils on roll. There are 286 students in the sixth form and 50 boarders. The school has prevciously been recognised under a number of designations, including; training school, Leading Edge, Science Specialist, High Performance and Gifted and Talented SSAT Consultant School. Keswick School retains a traditional atmosphere, with over 650 years of history. This includes a prefect system with a Head Boy and Head Girl, a House system with Heads of House, Prizegiving and uniform for students in both the main school and sixth form. Facilities include boarding accommodation, ski slope, performing arts theatre and an extra-curricular programme including sports, outdoor education, music and drama. If offers a wide range of other opportunities for pupils, including foreign exchange visits and charity events. Keswick School is a leading partner in the Western Lakes Teaching School Alliance.
Partnerships
Keswick School has a variety of partnerships with a range of organisations. Including:
Gen 2 – Gen 2 is an electronics and engineering training organisation based in the North West of England. A-Level Systems and Control is run in partnership with Gen 2.
React – React is a Cumbrian-based engineering firm, they provide support and guidance to students who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering.
Lamont Pridmore Ltd – Lamont Pridmore is one of the leading, independent chartered accountancy practices in Cumbria, Lancashire and Southern Scotland. They provide practical support to pupils who are studying Business Studies for GCSE and A Level.
The Rotary Club – The local Rotary Club support students with a particular interest in Design Technology, Textiles and Catering.
The Lions Club – The local Lions Club support students at the school with a particular interest in Design Technology. They also award a prize at the annual Prizegiving for the student who makes the most contribution in the local community.
Boarding
Keswick School is one of 37 State Boarding Schools in England and Wales. Lairthwaite Boarding House was purpose built on the school site and has been recently refurbished to a very high standard. It is a co-educational house designed to meet the needs of over 50 students aged 11–18. This relatively low number of places generates a unique family environment, which has proven to be very successful formula.
The residential house staff, with over 120 years combined experience, seek to create a safe, caring and stimulating ethos in which boarders are able to develop and mature.
Keswick School boarding house is home to a range of boarders from Britain and overseas. Boarders in residence include those from rural Cumbria, other parts of the UK, those whose parents are working on overseas contracts throughout the world, and European Union nationals from a range of countries around the world.
Bursaries
Keswick School offer a wide range of bursaries to their pupils. These bursaries are donated by individuals or organisations who have a specific interest in a given area. Some of the bursaries on offer to Keswick School pupils include –
The Steven Luckman Bursary – The Steven Luckman bursary is an annual award set up to provide support for students seeking to further their interests in science and technology. It provides financial support to help students attend science and technology related courses, activities or work experience. The bursary was established in memory of Steven Luckman (1973–2010) who attended Keswick School from 1982 until 1989. In 2014, three Year 12 students at Keswick School were awarded a Steven Luckman bursary to support their studies and interests in science and technology.
Arkwright Engineering Scholarship – The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship/s provide students with a £600 financial award to enhance their A level studies and a range of activities to enhance their understanding and experience of engineering. The Scholarships are respected by leading universities and companies and are supported by top engineering employers and organisations such as Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, National Grid, Balfour Beatty, Microsoft Research, Thales, The Royal Air Force, The Royal Navy and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. The Scholarships are also funded by charitable donors including, principal donors The Reece Foundation, The Lloyd’s Register Foundation, the Gannochy Trust, the Dulverton Trust, the Emmott Foundation and S.F.I.A Educational Trust.
The Gilbert Smithson Adair Bursary – The Gilbert Smithson Adair bursary is an annual award set up to promote scientific research, innovation and entrepreneurial solutions to issues in the fields of biology and environmental studies. It provides financial support to help students undertake an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) which goes well beyond the scope of traditional A-level studies. The bursary was established by the Gilbert Smithson Adair Trust in memory of Gilbert Adair and reflects his interests as he grew up in Cumbria in the early 1900s. Gilbert Adair went on to study Natural Sciences at King’s College, Cambridge, where he later became a fellow.
iPerform
iPerform at Keswick School is one of the town’s newest festivals. The performing arts festival is now in its third year and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever. With talented musicians and performers (many with equity contracts!) iPerform is a celebration of what young people can do in the world of performing arts.
Trips
Keswick School offer a wide range of trips, which are linked to subjects, to their students. There is a huge variety of trips which include the local area, the UK and around the world. Including visits to, Austria, London, France, Rome, Belgian Battlefields, Arran, German Exchange, Venice, Malham, Eastern Europe and Geneva.
