Kevin James Manning (born 7 March 1967)[1] is an Irish flat racing jockey. Manning rides principally for the stable of his father-in-law, Jim Bolger.[2] He gained his most notable success when riding New Approach to win the 2008 Epsom Derby.
Manning was champion flat racing apprentice jockey in Ireland with 33 winners in 1987[2] and took over as main stable jockey to Jim Bolger when Christy Roche left the stable in 1993. Manning won his first Group 1 race on Eva Luna in the 1994 Phoenix Stakes and his first classic race victory came in the 2002 Irish Oaks on Margarula.[2] He has since won major races in Ireland, Britain, France and Hong Kong, notably on the filly Alexander Goldrun who won Group 1 races in all those countries.
Manning's highest profile victory came in 2008 when he rode Bolger's New Approach to a half-length victory over Tartan Bearer in the Epsom Derby. He subsequently won the Irish Champion Stakes and Champion Stakes on New Approach.
In 2013 Manning won the 2000 Guineas on New Approach's son Dawn Approach.
Manning is married to Bolger's daughter, Una[2]
