King of the Channel (rowing)
The King of the Channel (KOTC) is a yearly dragon boat race in the Netherlands between University College Roosevelt (UCR), formerly known as the Roosevelt Academy (RA), situated in the city of Middelburg; and the Hogeschool Zeeland (HZ), also called University of Applied Sciences, situated in the city of Vlissingen. Although not being a real rowing race, the concept mimics the well known Boat Race, an annual rowing race between the Oxford University Boat Club and the Cambridge University Boat Club, rowed between competing eights on the River Thames in London, England.
The specific structure of the event has been changing and developing through the years. The 2011 edition of the KOTC involved three events. The first was a dragon boat race between UCR, HZ, and ROC. The second was a businesslike race with 4 person boats. And finally the epic, traditional, and final race was between HZ and UCR.
