Kirby's Dream Collection, known in Japan as Hoshi no Kirby 20th Anniversary Special Collection (星のカービィ 20周年スペシャルコレクション Hoshi no Kābi Ni-ju-shūnen Supesharu Korekushon), is a 2012 video game published by Nintendo for the Wii system. It is an anthology disc celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Kirby series, which took place on April 27, 2012. In addition to the disc, the package includes a booklet that highlights Kirby's history, as well as a soundtrack CD containing music from multiple series entries. The game was released in Japan on July 19, 2012 and in North America on September 16, 2012.[1] It was never released in Europe or Australia, although an issue of the Official Nintendo Magazine confirmed a Winter 2012 release.
Content
The disc includes six Kirby titles:[1]
- Kirby's Dream Land (Game Boy)
- Kirby's Adventure (NES)
- Kirby's Dream Land 2 (Game Boy)
- Kirby Super Star (SNES)
- Kirby's Dream Land 3 (SNES)
- Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (Nintendo 64)
The disc also features new challenge stages based on those found in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Additionally, the game includes a museum section, which spotlights every title in the Kirby series as of 2012, and includes three viewable episodes from the anime Kirby: Right Back at Ya! ("Kirby Comes to Cappy Town", "Crusade for the Blade", and "Waddle While You Work").
All games included in the collection have been calibrated for use with the Wii Remote turned horizontally. GameCube Controller and Classic Controller are also supported. The game supports up to four players depending on which game is chosen. Like the other four games (Kirby's Adventure, Kirby Super Star, Kirby's Dream Land 3, and Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards) in the collection, the Game Boy games (Kirby's Dream Land and Kirby's Dream Land 2) are treated as "Virtual Console" titles, complete with the "suspending play" and manual features despite Game Boy titles never being released on the service via the Wii Shop Channel as they were being released on the Nintendo 3DS via the Nintendo eShop at the time of the game's release. All six games have also been released separately on the Virtual Console via the Wii Shop Channel, 3DS eShop, and Wii U eShop.
Sales and Reception
As of August 25, 2012, Kirby's Dream Collection has sold 200,000 copies in Japan. Critical and fan reception in North America has been positive, praising the amount of content within. The game currently holds an aggregate score of 81.29% on GameRankings[2] and 82/100 on Metacritic.[3]
