Krishnancoil
Krishnancoil is a suburb in Nagercoil, in the District of Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, India, named after the temple of Krishna situated within. It was built 1000 years ago. It is situated on National Highway 47, which connects Nagercoil with Trivandrum, the capital city of Kerala. The Krishnan temple at Krishnancoil is described as " The Guruvayoor of South " as the chief deity is visually similar to the one in the Guruvayoor temple.
It connects the realistic tradition of Hindu mysticism to local folklore and happens to be a premiere spot for local devotees to show up and present their prayers.
A Government Primary school that imparts education up to 5th standard is located in the suburb. Most of the people in the area work in the offices of the Nagercoil town or in agriculture. The main crop is rice. The railway station situated in this suburb is called Nagercoil Town, and the main railway station of Nagercoil is called Nagercoil Junction. Krishnancoil is nearer to vadasery police station.
Location
The Krishnancoil temple in the suburb is well maintained, and was renovated in 2008 for Kumbabhishekam which took place after many decades. The temple is surrounded by the living population in 4 main streets named according to the direction(south, north, west mada street and sanadi street). The pond adjacent to the temple (known in Tamil as "Theppakulam") has two "pipal trees" on its banks, one each on the west and south sides. The annual ten-day temple festival is conducted during the Tamil month of Chithirai, which falls between April 14 and May 14. Krishna is the childhood avatar of this temple.
Water Filtration Plant
There is a drinking water filtration plant situated here popularly known as "filter house" which filters the drinking water being supplied from Mukkadal dam to Nagercoil town and surrounding areas.
Population Division
The majority population of Krishnancoil belongs to the Tamil Brahmins and Vellala ( pillai) followed by Nadars, Nairs. There were strong inter caste misunderstandings earlier but now recent years have seen unprecedented unity growing among all sections. The main reason attributed for this is the formation of KBST ( Krishna Bhaktha Seva Trust) a voluntary organisation for managing the religious affairs and ten days annual temple festivals. KIIT (Krishnancoil IraiThondil Ilaignargal Trust) plays a vital role in this place with more supportive Volunteers and conducting Vilakku Pooja in every year of AAVANI month. This trust was inclusive of major castes and had been successfully conducting the temple festivals for the past few years in a grand manner.
